作者简介 The translator Jean Hersholt (1886-1956) was a Danish-born actor whose Hollywood and radio careers flourished in the 1920s through 1950s. He was also an avid collector of Hans Christian Andersen books, which now reside in the Library of Congress, and he dedicated years of his life to translating all 168 of Andersen's tales from the original Danish, which were first published in 1942 and which is considered one of the finest English translations. One of Hersholt's most famous roles was as Shirley Temple's grandfather in the 1937 film Heidi. The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is presented each year at the Oscars.

Purchased for Grandma (me) to read to my Granddaughters at our home. The girls are 5, 9, 10, 12 years young. They LOVED the stories I read while they ate breakfast and were taken into the world of Hans Christian Anderson's stories. The book stays at Grandma's house, the stories get to go home with the girls! And YES, they wanted to hear more and more and more!
The narration is interesting and engaging, great for kids 9-13 years old. Some of the illustrations are a bit creepy, but that's the nature of fairy tales.
This is the best such book on this famous author. Taschen does it again. The illustrations are in vibrant color, and are carefully selected--and from reports, by Benedikt Taschen who reviews all of his books prior to release--and particularly the ones with such wonderful art as this one!
