A Comprehensible Guide to Controller Area Network |
A Comprehensible Guide to Controller Area Network by Wilfried Voss represents the most thoroughly researched and most complete work on CAN available in the marketplace. Controller Area Network (CAN) is a serial network technology that was originally designed for the automotive industry, especially for European cars, but has also become a popular bus in industrial automation as well as other applications. The CAN bus is primarily used in embedded systems, and as its name implies, is a network technology that provides fast communication among microcontrollers up to real-time requirements, eliminating the need for the much more expensive and complex technology of a Dual-Ported RAM. This book provides complete information on all CAN features and aspects combined with a high level of readability. The author, Wilfred Voss, is the President of esd electronics, Inc., a company that specializes in CAN technology. The company is located in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Mr. Voss has worked in the CAN industry since 1997 and before that was a specialist in the paper industry. He has a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wuppertal in Germany. Mr. Voss has conducted numerous seminars on CAN and CANopen during various Real Time Embedded And Computing Conferences (RTECC) and ISA (Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation Society) events all over the United States and Canada.

比国内的书好多了,把CAN总线介绍的很通俗易懂,比看中文书强。
看起来很简单。178也没几页
这本书是好,但是不适合我
This is probably the worst technical book I have ever read, and the unfortunate thing is I actually spent money on this.
It repeats itself over and over and over again. The author is trying to fill up pages. Even diagrams are repeated a few pages away from each other. Here is an example,
On page 26 is the paragraph "In order to explain higher layer protocols we must refer again to the ISO/OSI Reference Model as shown in picture 3.5.1." And sure enough, there in picture 3.5.1, is the ISO/OSI 7 Layer Reference Model that everyone has seen a thousand times before. But make that a thousand and one because on page 22, in figure 3.1.1 is the EXACT SAME PICTURE. Author doesn't do the obvious think of referring back to a picture earlier in the chapter, instead he instantiates an identical picture and refers to the new picture (GOAL...1/2 page used up!)
I can't count the number of times that this happens in this book..repetition, repetition, repetition. This is mind numbing when you read it. Since the reader has seen this pattern so many times, it is easy to skip over something new and useful. But let me tell you, there is an exponential decay of new information as you read through this book, because everything is repeated. This is a 30 page book expanded to 144. .
The book contains "notes" and these "Hear Ye Hear Ye" sections scattered throughout. They are all replicated either among themselves, or with the mainline text, again repetition to the point of lunacy.
This book reminds me of what would happen if you took a series of lectures and turned them into a book. Each morning, as the instructor, you grab your cup of coffee and you informally remind all of your students as to what you covered yesterday, the day before, the week before, or even throughout the entire class up until now.
That works live, but it doesn't work in a book. Here is how it works in this book.
Do you remember what you read 2 minutes ago?
..CUT AND PASTE EXACT TEXT FROM PREVIOUS PAGE
Do you remember what you read 20 minutes ago?
CUT AND PASTE TEXT FROM PREVIOUS CHAPTER
And so forth.
Giving it a 1 star .
I guess the term Comprehensible in the title should have been a warning flag. I wanted Comprehensive.
There is good information here for someone new to CAN. I found the reading tedious due to material being constantly repeated in what seemed like a way to increase the page count. The information could have been presented in a much more efficient manner and editing by a native English speaker would have considerably improved readability.
This book does a pretty good job of explaining how CAN communication protocol works. For someone who does not know what CAN bus is or how it functions this book is perfect. The diagrams in the book are very good at illustrating what the author is describing.
The book does repeat a lot of things. Sometimes you just have to skip sections when you realize its just reiterating the same thing you have read two other times. But it's not that bad compared to all of the useful information you get from the book.
I'll keep this brief, but I wanted to give this book the 5-star rating it deserves.
This book is a one-stop shop to go from "What the hell is CAN?" to "OK, now I know everything I need to know about *CAN*."
This book doesn't - and can't & shouldn't -- discuss higher layer protocols, nor the specifics of the CAN controller chip on your board. It (thankfully) sticks to the subject without getting distracted on tangential topics. (Note: I believe the author has a book coming out in early 2008 regarding the higher-layer J1939, I'll be waiting in line for that one too.)
The book is very clearly written, has lots of pictures (a must in any technical book), and is thorough & complete.
*Anyone* starting with CAN should start here.
Sentences and/or paragraphs are repeated much too often. This book also isn't organized well. Needs an editor to streamline it. It's like a rough draft or second draft. The information is good, but it's annoying to read at times because of the way it's put together and too much repeat info.
