Captain Heinrich Paasch was the first to recognize the complexity and variety in marine vocabulary and technical terminology and the inherent need for a cohesive classification of nautical terms. Equipped with over thirty-five years of seafaring experience, including as a sailor, captain, and as a Surveyor to Lloyd's Register, Paasch sets out, chapter by chapter, an exhaustive explanation of all the principal parts of a ship's structure and equipment. He describes the main types of steam and sailing vessels; wooden and iron hulls; propulsion machinery; anchors and related equipment; masts and spars; standing and running rigging, as well as sails, tackle, blocks and ropes. 作者简介 Captain Heinrich Paasch first went to sea at the age of ten in 1845. After doing service in the German and Danish Navies and in the German, Dutch, and American Merchant Navies, he got his own command of a Russian ship at the age of 27. From 1879 he settled in Antwerp practicing as a ship surveyor to Lloyd’s Register, eventually investing a significant sum in printing 5,000 copies of this book which first appeared in 1885 as From Keel To Truck.

Good
If you are a maritime historian, this book is definitely for you. Detail, detail and more detail of every nook and cranny of square- riggers and early steamers. I was looking more for a dictionary for bluewater crusing. If this is the case, you would be better off buying the " Yachtman's Ten Language Dictionary"
For the historian this is packed from front to back with reproduced illistrations from its original publication in 1885. Many of my French and German speaking friends were quite impressed with the detail. There are only diagrams and the respective words translated into German or French. The bad thing about this dictionary is that if a word is not shown on the illistrated diagram and you do not know what the term is referring to, you will never know what it is. Overall it is an entertaining book for the modern day cruiser but it is not a necessity on a crusing vessel. Not recommended for a novice sailor.
This is one of the most detailed and complete maritime dictionairies that I have seen. If you are interested in square riggers then this is your most complete source. Every little nook and crany of these vessels are defined in great detail in English, German and French. Not a single item is left out in this old publication. If you are looking for something for modern yachts then I would recommend you purchase the Yachtmen's Ten Language Dictionary.
