Admittedly sexist. Was enjoying until the (SPOILER) the mermaid becomes a love interest that seduces (don't worry, it's G-rated seduction) the boy but she's really an evil sea witch who wants to eat him, or some crap like that. Great (sarcasm) -- just what we need -- more examples for young boys about the only girl characters being those who use their beauty and charm as a means of deception and evil.
This actually had me giggling (who am only reading it because I'm a children's librarian -- this kind of book isn't normally my thing) for quite a while, but once I hit the mermaid stuff, it wiped the smile right off my face.
My son loves this, however he was scared of the sea monster who talks about eating your skin. It is a bit violent on those couple of pages. My son required me to tape that section of the book closed so we don't encounter that again.
This book is my 9 year old's favorite. Frankly, I thought the cover was super cute so I ordered him the first in the series and luckily he thought the book was awesome and funny! We've gotten all the others in the series and are waiting for more!
I bought this book to read to my first grader before the author visit to her school. It was really good, we ordered the next books too. Usually I find that kids books are pretty painful to get through but this was a fun story. While she could have read it herself, it was a little too advanced for her. Great independent read for older grade school kids, but the story is fun to read aloud to the younger ones too. My 5 year old listened along and enjoyed it too.
