Steel World (Undying Mercenaries Series Book 1) (English Edition)

In the twentieth century Earth sent probes, transmissions and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed.

The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn’t the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers…someone had to do their dirty work for them, their fighting and dying.
I, James McGill, was born in 2099 on the fringe of the galaxy. When Hegemony Financial denied my loan applications, I was kicked out of the university and I turned to the stars. My first campaign involved the invasion of a mineral-rich planet called Cancri-9, better known as Steel World. The attack didn’t go well, and now Earth has entered a grim struggle for survival.
Humanity’s mercenary legions go to war in STEEL WORLD, bestselling author B. V. Larson’s latest science fiction novel.

This is a hard to put down little book. I'm not the first to say that you'll read the second half of it in one sitting. I didn't believe the previous reviewer until I found myself doing exactly that. The characters just make you want to keep reading, once you get used to them, and the bizzare twists and turns Mr. Larson comes up with in this book don't let you put the book down. I mean, where in the world did he come up with the notions he played out in Steel World???... from beginning to end. I was honestly suprised over and over with where this book went. I couldn't have thunk some of these crazy deals, much less predict them reading. I haven't had a novel raise my eyebrows like that in a long time. Lots of ground combat, believable and entertaining characters, and plot twists that will leave you scratching your head and cheering... what's not to like? Not much. This is the best nice low price e-book I've picked up in a long while. I sure hope there will be follow ups, but he's set a pretty high bar with this one.

We live in a new Golden Age of SciFi. With e-publishing, now that the publishers (those grim guardians at the gate) have been removed from the equation, a huge treasure-trove of great science-fiction, filtered, affirmed and confirmed by reader evals, has become available to the reader.

And the Undying Merc series is a true star, a great achievement, in this Golden Age of Sci-Fi.

I like to read the entire series, and then go back to the first book and make a review designed for someone who is looking at reading not just the book, but the whole series. And I can tell you that the series just gets better and better!

I am a huge fan of the Flashman historical fiction series. Like Flashman the hero of the Undying Merc series is a cad, a rotter, a bounder, a womanizer and a warrior who finds himself in the midst of great events. This series is, far-and-away, THE BEST Sci-Fi equalivilent to the Flashgun series, and THAT is an amazing achievement.

The books are also very, very funny. Darkly, richly, profoundly (and did I remember to say darkly?) funny. And yet the series is not dark, but really more light-hearted, because dying is just an inconvenience for the major characters!

I get more, true, deep, belly laughs from this series than anything I have read in a very long time. Indeed, for humor, to me (and I admit that this may make me just a little sick), this series is a lot like Terry Pratchett, who is the only other author who can hit my funny-bone in the same way.

Get the whole series. Read it all the way thru. You'll be glad you did!

I am going to stick my neck out and give this one five stars. I enjoyed this novel thoroughly. This one is a real page-turner. Firstly, the author presents several original new concepts here. The regeneration strategy of the human mercenary forces is startling and original. Further, the Galactic Empire situation in which Earth finds itself is also quite original and is downright fascinating. This is a scenario that cries out for lots of sequels!

The storyline in this one is pretty good too, and unlike many military SF novels there is significant character development and the storyline is more than just one action scene after another. There is no shortage of heroes and villains here and sometimes it is difficult to determine which is which.

To the author: sequels please. RJB.
