Large Turbo-Generators: Malfunctions and Symptoms

This book presents a comprehensive, ordered relationship between malfunctions and symptoms occurring in large turbogenerators. With this book, the operator and/or engineer in a generating station could identify underlying causes of a developing component degradation or a failure quicker, which could potentially save both time and money and reduce the trial-and-error troubleshooting process.

Large turbogenerators are the most important source of electricity. They can be found in thousands of power stations in every country. Forced outages, failures and degradation of these very expensive machines have an enormous aggregate cost to society. As such, any tool that can ameliorate loss of production by shaving time from troubleshooting activities, and avoiding unnecessary costs by detecting and promptly responding to component degradation, represents a step forward.

It's a book that you will either like or hate. I start with the latter option. All throughout the text, the authors make reference to their earlier book from 2008: "Handbook of Large Turbo-Generator Operation and Maintenance" from IEEE Press. In this respect I would say that the present book does not stand on its own and a copy of the previously-mentioned IEEE book is a must to have if you are to troubleshoot malfunctions effectively.

On the other hand, very detailed and clear coloured pictures abound in the text. These pictures help a lot to identify problems and to compare with what you are seeing on your machine. The book is certainly not to be read from cover to cover; One can just open a page, study a particular malfunction and study the possible remedies. A generator is a highly complex machine and one cannot expect that a book can cover all aspects comprehensively for that can take up several volumes. I would have liked for instance that the authors pay more attention to rotor vibration and to the unbalanced magnetic pull. But the latter's topic in-depth discussion would have involved mathematics and the authors do not want maths in their book! Still, this new book by the authors is perhaps the most comprehensive one out there that discusses the malfunctions and symptoms in the operation of large turbo-generators.

CRC Press has produced a well typeset book. The index is very comprehensive and this enormously helps to locate a desired topic quickly. On a negative side, I find that the list of symptoms (Table 4.2) and the list of malfunctions (Table 5.1) for instance can be difficult to access. An inset to the back cover for instance containing these useful information would have been very handy.

On a final word, I would say that this book is written by two authors who are very knowledgable in the field and hence this text will definitely serve as a useful handbook on the machine shop floor for several decades to come. I would recommend though to also have a copy of the book from 2008 by IEEE-Press by the same authors.
