Secrets Of Droon #01: The Hidden Stairs And The Magic Carpet

When Neal and Julie agree to help Eric straighten up his basement, they never imagine that they're in for more than getting a little dusty. But as the three kids follow a soccer ball into the small room under the basement stairs, the floor suddenly evaporates to reveal a rainbow staircase to another world!

Before they have a chance to look around, they are caught in the midst of a battle. Shiny red men riding giant lizards are shooting arrows straight at them. They are saved by Princess Keeah of Droon who tells them the red men are warriors for the evil Lord Sparr. She promises to help them get home if they will carry a message for her.

The message is delivered successfully but the brave Keeah has been captured by Lord Sparr. Equipped with a cape of invisibility, a six legged camel/horse, and a talkative spider-troll named Max, the three children manage to sneak in and rescue Keeah.

Astride a magic carpet, Julie, Eric, Neal, and Keeah fly to the stairs that will take the three "Upper World" children back home. The kids are astonished to discover that no time has passed back in their own world. But even as they marvel at their adventure, they realize that Princess Keeah has left them a secret message: Your dreams will tell you to return!

Do I like the Droon books? Nope. I find them to be only slightly better than the Magic Tree House books as far as writing and story. I don't think they make good read aloud books. But my students love them. They are the most popular "easy chapter books" that I own. As a reading tutor I've read the first couple of Droon books with students so many times I can pretty much recite them by memory. They fill a niche and I'm glad I have them. Reluctant readers will often choose these over just about any other series.

I read this series as a 3rd grader - maybe a bit younger/older. It was one of my favorites. For starters, there are a ton of books in the series so I was never without a book. Also, the books completely opened up my imagination. The main character is swept away on a journey and I truly remember feeling like I went along with him. I'd suggest this book for any young reader. I just bought the book for my younger sister who is 7 years old. I think it will work well as a 'read on your own' fantasy book for her. I'm excited to see if she likes it!

Take a generic middle school fantasy and then simplify, simplify, simplify until it is almost just an outline of a book. Now, who wants to read this?
It's no good for story time reading because there is nothing to engage a little kid's imagination. There is nothing interesting for the child to follow. It's just an outline. Might as well read him an outline of "War and Peace".
But, it's no good for an older reader, because it is too simple and simple-minded.
So, I don't quite know who would want this. It is about the equivalent of reading Sugar Bear adventures on a cereal box. It might be interesting to a very first time reader. Sentences are short and simple. All easy words. Mostly all simple declarative sentences. I could see having one or two of these as a sort of intro/bridge reader in your kid's library, but boy I don't see having more.
Try the sample, above. And remember, there are usually scads of these at ayrd sales for a dime each.)

My third grade son is dyslexic. Before he stumbled across this series, he had never read a chapter book on his own. He just finished book five in this series, and I have ordered him the next three books. He's hooked, and I couldn't be happier. The books are short and written at about a beginning third grade level. They are not literary masterpieces, but they are fast moving and high interest. If I could personally thank Tony Abbott for writing these books, I would. A 5 star Amazon review will have to suffice!

My boys loved this series. I read it all to my older son, then to my younger son, both when they were about 6 or younger at the time. Now he is reading them on his own. Violence is very mild/cartoonish. This was perfect for kids who might like Harry Potter but find it too dark (although I concede it is not nearly as well written as the Potter series). Only happy endings here.
