This is an introduction to raspberry pi, yes, but holy crap do I feel ripped off. I could have found all of this information with far more detail and accuracy on the raspberry pi wiki pages. The python sections, which make up a majority of the book, felt rushed to completion.
Like a lot of these books Simon rushes to push out, there are errors. I don't know what his editors do, but it's clearly not editing. Even if they are, they seem to skipping a lot of parts. In this book, there were several parts where parts of program code were missing or changed without clear explanation. I feel like if I didn't already have an understanding of BASIC and C, I wouldn't have known what to look for and would have been utterly lost and frustrated at many points throughout the book.
I'm normally a fan of Simon's work, so I'm going to pretend this book was never written and never talk about it again.
tl;dr- I didn't like it, others did. If you're well versed in arduino and BASIC, you might want to skip this book, learn Python somewhere else, and find RasPi specific information from the wiki pages.
This book seems short by page number, but has SO MUCH information, and is exactly everything a Pi user would want to know about Python and the functions of the Pi itself. It not only covers all of the software functions of Python someone would need, but the hardware as well. I am working with the Pi as well as the Arduino, and this covers the connection between the two. Also talks about using Python to interact with files and scraping data from the web. I can't recommend this book highly enough, I'm astounded by the relevance of the information contained, and have purchased other, longer books that didn't have half the information I found here. Especially for the price, you can't go wrong, this is a must-have book for Pi users of all levels, as it covers everything from the most basic information to in-depth hardware / programming details in a way that's interesting and accessible.
It's a fast read. Informative. It does help to learn the programming language "Python". First critique would be that it needs to be a larger book with a deeper look into the language. Second, it is not written for the raspberry pi 3. It is for the prior version.
Still, it is a resource well worth the few dollars it cost. More than enough to get you started down road Pi.
As a Programmer who have never coded in Python before, I found this book and it's examples quite good. Got me to where I needed to be to take things to a whole new level and make learning Python easy. If you are not already a seasoned programmer, this might be a bit more challenging because you have to learn how programming works while also learning Python. Certainly not where I would start, mostly because Python syntax is quite different from most other commonly used languages.
5 star because it is exactly what it says it is and does a great job showing how to program in Python.
I learned FORTRAN and COBOL years ago and have not programmed (coded in today's parlance) anything since. This book helped get me back on track. Good examples and easy to read.
