A Story, a Story

Winner of the Caldecott Medal

Once, all the stories in the world belonged to Nyame, the Sky God. He kept them in a box beside his throne. But Ananse, the Spider man, wanted them -- and caught three sly creatures to get them.

This story of how we got our own stories to tell is adapted from an African folktale.

作者简介

Gail E. Haley is a young but prolific author and illustrator. She has fourteen books to her credit, in addition to illustrating her husband's syndicated newspaper column, "Parents and Children." Miss Haley is the mother of two children -- Marguerite, age tow, and another born shortly after she completed this book.

The idea for this book came to Miss Haley as a result of living in the Caribbean. There she found stories in which tigers and leopards appeared. These, happily, are not part of the Caribbean fauna. And so she traced the origins of these stories back to their sources in Africa. She studied African folklore and culture in preparation for writing and illustrating this book, and to capture the flavor of the languages, the people, their customs and life styles.

The woodcuts that illustrate this book were cut and printed by Miss Haley in her own print shop. She lives and works in New York with her family, surrounded by a large collection of early children's books, toys and games, cut outs and dolls, going back to the seventeenth century.

My parents purchased this book for me when I was a child, so when it was time for our Black Culture Jubilee at my school I wanted to bring the Anansi tales to life for my students. I projected the book onto a classroom wall and read to a mixed age group who loved the tale and the parents enjoyed remembering the tale as well. Perfect story!

A Story, A story, is an african tale retold by Gail Haley. She also happens to be the illustrator, and the winner of a Cladecott medal.

This is the story of Anase, the spider man. He's the spider man because he spins a web up to heaven to ask the Sky God for his stories so he can share with the world. Hence, why stories are called spider stories. When Anase fulfills the God's order he is given the box of stories, and they get scattered all over Earth to share.

The story of Anase itself is a great tale of an old man capturing unlikely gifts for the God, to receive the box of stories. But the idea that the Earth has stories because the box openend and stories scattered everywhere is simple, yet imaginative. This is a great story for kids who like tales. If you like the book "Why mosquitos buzz in people's ears" then you would like this story. It's got great illustrations, and is a wonderful folk tale.

I purchased this book because it appears on one of the Scholastic DVD sets with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. My children love the animated version so I thought we'd see if they liked the book also. Its such a wonderful classic and so beautifully illustrated. I love the cultural diversity that it adds to our bedtime story time together.

It's a very good book.Quite an interesting choice of language. It will entertain one every time it is read.It may be hard for a very small child to understand.

For my granddaughter, a story I loved as a kid.
