Smoky the Cowhorse |
But then he comes across a new enemy, one that walks on two legs and makes funny sounds. Smoky can't beat this enemy the way he has all the others. But does he really want to? Or could giving up some of his freedom mean getting something in return that's even more valuable?

I first read smoky when I was in my early 20's. I had a first edition paperback that a housemate stole from me. And I have spent years and years looking for another copy. Every bookstore tried to tell me the book didn't exist. But when I was up in Montana, i found another book by will James, and that publisher had it listed as available from them. So I looked it up under used books, and bought myself a new copy.SMOKY THE COW HORSE has always been one of my all time favorites.
Smoky: The Cow Horse was one of my favorite books as a child. this is the original edition that a sibling stole and tossed - - and now in my sixties it was a treat to receive this again with the cover and inside photos I loved for so many years. It was great to re-read this treasure!
I read this book when I was a 10 year old boy, and it was a superb book. We bought the book for our nine year old granddaughter who is very much into horses, riding, and competition. She loves the story.
The only problem is that this wonderful book in a first illustrated edition was delivered with an ugly sticker right over the horse's face! Removing the sticker tore the fragile old paper so now the horse's face is a tear in the precious paper. Absolutely thoughtless packaging!
I can easily see why this book won the Newbery Award. While I was reading I felt that I was sitting down at the campfire after a long day at work, listening to the story being told to me. The casual words of the cowboy just came naturally through, spelled and used as they would have been right there on the ranch. Though it is quickly described as being like Black Beauty with ranch hands, it was very entertaining and educational to follow the life of one ranch horse and see what could happen to him back in the days of the real cowboy.
