Lots of reading. My students don't enjoy reading, so it has been a chore to get them to even look at the problems. The one student willing to try it out got very confused by what answer they were looking for. The story was about a dog tied to a stake and trying to figure out the length the dog could reach. My sixth grade class just finished area and volume, and they had a very hard time with this passage. Maybe more advance students would be a better match for this book.
I guess this is at least middle school level math. I bought it to engage my daughter who is having a hard time in math, instead it bored and frustrated her. The second problem involved finding the radium of a circle if the square footage was 1,000.... maybe she'll be ready for this in a few years.
I'm a private math tutor and am using this book as a Friday reward for two sixth grade girls who are studying algebra one with me. It is challenging in some interesting ways. It is full of story problems to be unraveled, about two kids who are detectives. I had given it to my daughter, who was the first year teacher and she said her kids loved it more than any other part of math. They can be solved alone or in groups. I really recommend this book.
It was great watching my son grab this book a few times to work on his own without me even mentioning it. WOW! He is age 7 by the way. I think the whole concept of math "Mysteries" is what did it for him. Great idea.
Excellent book. I do tuoring for 1st to 3rd graders who struggle with reading. My tutee learned to read but prefers math. This is a perfect blend for him. He's now a third grader. If the ad mentioned it is for 4th to 8th graders, I missed it. That would be my one suggestion, to ask sellers to specify the target age or grade level for the child. Alvena Stanfield
