The Spanish Slavers were an ever-present threat to the Navaho way of life. One lovely spring day, fourteen-year-old Bright Morning and her friend Running Bird took their sheep to pasture. The sky was clear blue against the red buttes of the Canyon de Chelly, and the fields and orchards of the Navahos promised a rich harvest. Bright Morning was happy as she gazed across the beautiful valley that was the home of her tribe. She turned when Black Dog barked, and it was then that she saw the Spanish slavers riding straight toward her.

Recommended book for book club. The story is a tragedy but the main character has hope. Good historical fiction about factual events. Great for teens and adults. Quick read.

Purchased as a 8th grade school requirement, my son liked the book.

The first half of the book has little to do with the Long Walk but is interesting and creates the characters. The Long Walk section is very mild, considering what really happened and how many people died, but it is a good start to learn about this significant event in Native American and White American history and interaction.

My 10 year old daughter listened to the audiobook of this and enjoyed. She loves Scott O'Dell's Native American stories!
