Hans Christian Andersen wurde am 2. April 1805 in Odense (D?nemark) geboren und wuchs in ?rmlichen Verh?ltnissen auf. Der D?nenk?nig Friedrich VI., dem seine Begabung aufgefallen war, erm?glichte ihm 1822 den Besuch der Lateinschule in Slagelsen. Bis 1828 wurde ihm auch das Universit?tsstudium bezahlt. Andersen unternahm Reisen durch Deutschland, Frankreich und Italien, die ihn zu lebhaften impressionistischen Studien anregten. Der Weltruhm Andersens ist auf den insgesamt 168 von ihm geschriebenen M?rchen begründet. Andersen starb am 4.8.1875 in Kopenhagen.

I ordered this collection of Hans Christian Andersen stories after looking at many options, specifically because I wanted a good selection of stories with beautiful illustrations for my children's library. I had Googled some Honor Appleton illustrations and loved them. Unfortunately, none of her gorgeous paintings are in color in this book and some do not translate well to black and white reproductions. Others were black and white pen drawings and are just fine here. But I would not have bought this had I known I was not getting any color paintings. Now I will look about again and perhaps order the Michael Hague collection. This book is also a bit small in dimensions to make a good read-aloud-with-pictures version

These tales were the friends of my childhood (many, many years ago) reread again and again and again, and it is very good to revisit them. Their frequently strong and obvious moral content did not put me off. On the contrary, it had the desired effect of increasing my desire to be a better person. Some of the saddest tales made me cry, but I still loved them. And the sad endings prepared me for the fact that, in real life, there are also sad endings. Their originality is captivating. Certain images have stayed with me through the decades. The sanitized, fluffy, happy ending Disney versions have removed the heart of these stories. If you have no faith, you will not like these tales. If you don't like stories with obvious moral content, you will not like these tales. If you believe that children should be coddled and protected from any of the darker aspects of life, you should stick to the Disney versions. But you will be denying yourself a world of wonder and beauty, a world with a heart and a soul, a world with images that remain pertinent to this day. I believe that every child should hear at least some of them.
When I don't feel like facing reality or just need something to put me to sleep, I dive into the world of this book. I love the illustrations, as they are what I consider truly classic. The pictures, which look like magical paintings, nest among the paragraphs, and my mind smoothly drifts over the blend of text and visuals. The stories themselves are beautifully imaginative and just the right length for me. The book contains fairy tales which have many versions going around out there. I tend to prefer certain versions over others, and I am finicky over how tales are ended. I like fairy tales better when they are ended positively either in the sense of a happily ever after or in the sense of the character passing on a lesson learned from his mistakes. The versions of all the fairy tales, except one, presented in this book were wonderful and satisfactory to my taste. "The Little Mermaid" is the only story I found not quite to my satisfaction because it abruptly ended sadly while leaving out the moral shown in some of the tale's versions. Other than that, the stories are all beautiful, with endings that leave me feeling content when I close the book. There is a balance of stories with happy and tragic endings, so I can choose a story which fits my mood. This book is my escape from the real world.
I did a search for the highest-rated collections of Andersen fairy tales on Amazon, and then checked them all out from my local library. Even though this Reader's Digest collection didn't show up in my Amazon list, I also checked it out. And I like it MUCH better than the others*, both for the translation and for the illustrations.
All my life I've felt lukewarm about Andersen's fairy tales. But they are so alive, vibrant and emotive in this collection that I now see why his works are so highly regarded. I'm a converted Andersen fan because of this book! I love it. It will make a beautiful addition to my library!
The translation by Neil Philip is elegant and lyrical, yet very simple and conversational, just the way it is in the original Danish. Most of the other translations were either so complex and formal or so abridged and simplified that they didn't pull me in, but this one allowed me to immediately and vividly picture everything being described. The words are large and well spaced, not cramped together on the page, which draws me in even more, and which I would imagine a child would prefer as well.
Accompanying the words are beautiful full-page gold-leaf illustrations throughout, at least one per story, by Isabelle Brent. They remind me very much of the work of Gustav Klimt (who did "The Kiss") with some medieval touches as well. I think they match the stories perfectly, especially the colorful gold-leaf ornamentation, which to me parallels the richness of the details and depth of the emotions captured in the fairy tails.
AND this collection has FORTY fairy tales, more than most (or maybe all) of the other illustrated volumes. This book is not small; it's the size of a coffee table book.
*The other translations I perused are: Erik Haugaard, Lily Owens, Tiina Nunnally, Anthea Bell, Reginald Spink, Lucas/Paull, Sheila Black (abridged, yuck!), and Maria Tatar (annotated, which was REALLY distracting), and maybe some others.
