Aircraft: The Definitive Visual History |
Aviation enthusiasts of all stripes and ages will welcome learning more about key brands and big players from yesterday and today — whether it's the marvels of hot air balloons or the fantastic engines of Boeing, Lockheed, and more.
Planes are divided equally between military and commercial aircraft, and iconic aircraft of each era, such as the Supermarine Spitfire and Concorde, are showcased in beautifully photographed spreads with "virtual tours" that reveal the anatomy of these legendary planes.
Produced in association with the Smithsonian Institution.

Having ordered this book well in advance, I had high hopes for it. Unfortunately, it turns out to be a superficial effort as it was mainly written by general staff writers, not aviation historians. Each aircraft is described in just a single sentence. Anyone with a solid knowledge of aviation history will spot errors and inconsistencies with the dates used in the descriptions of many of the aircraft shown. However, the real issue that reveals the limited knowledge of the people who put the book together is the selection of aircraft for inclusion and the exclusion of others in each categorized section; some categories don't really make much sense. Why put different mission types of aircraft in one section that don't have much to do with each other? A 1950s section on bombers but with no Boeing B-52? The relative sizing of aircraft shown in each section also makes no sense at times. Why show the small Avro Anson many times the size of a large Boeing 314 flying boat? The choice of photo cut outs of some aircraft was a real screw up, particularly with commercial types. Why show a Fokker 100 with no engines? How bad can you mangle the cut out of a Grumman F-14? A decade by decade analysis of aircraft might make sense on the surface, but aviation technology does not advance exactly along those hard timelines. It appears that a limited picture library was used to source the book; a flaw for such an illustrated, "visual" book concept. Overall, a low-budget, mediocre-knowledge effort. Sad to see the Smithsonian name on it. I recommend other Smithsonian books instead: Flight: The Complete History by R. G. Grant; Air and Space: The National Air and Space Museum Story of Flight by Andrew Chaikin; or Milestones of Aviation edited by John T. Greenwood and Von Hardesty as alternatives.
My kid of ten years old, love it. I'm an aviation lover since I was just a kid and I wanted to introduce my kid to this world in a way that we find points in common and share more time together. My good surprise was the book has a lot of images and smart text within the images, text easy and fast to read and to learn of. The book is non-expensive at all if you balance price and the content that it offers, for me is a buying option to start learning about the history of aviation. Writing reviews has become an accidental hobby for me, and it always makes my day to knowing that people find my reviews helpful. This item was not provided for review consideration, I buy it! :-)
My husband and I fell in love with DK (especially the Smithsonian line) during a trip to the Smithsonian museums. The books are filled with an immense amount of information which is presented in a fascinating, readable way. Of course the author couldn't include absolutely every single detail about the subject at hand, but they still did a wonderful job. The photos are gorgeous and a perfect complement to the information being presented. The books themselves have sturdy binding and stout construction.
This book is an amazing visual and textual recount of aviation history spanning from the period beginning with the first flights to modern day contributions to aviation. As I have many books regarding aviation history I find this book to be one of the nicest in my collection. I would highly recommend this for any that are an aviation nut like me. You will not be disappointed. Stunning visuals and detail in a nice hard bound package.
