Grade 3-5-This attractive offering addresses the issues, questions, and equipment that youngsters starting riding lessons are likely to encounter. Colorful, crisp photographs expand understanding of the text, aided by helpful captions. Two-page spreads are devoted to topics such as "Why take riding lessons?" "Where to take riding lessons," "Clothes to wear for riding," and "Types of ponies." The focus of this book is English-style riding, and information on Western-style is limited to two pages on "Western tack" and is oddly missing from the discussion of "Competitive riding." An additional purchase.

Gr. 3-7. Packed with sharp color photos and clear, step-by-step directions, this entry in the Kingfisher Riding Club series offers young people a solid introduction to equestrian technique. Beginning sections address what to look for in a stable and an instructor, equipment for both rider and horse, and instructions for saddling up as well as a brief overview of pony types and how to match horses to riders. Later sections take readers through lessons, from getting started--mounting, sitting, and holding the reins--to actual riding through a horse's gaits. The final section offers ideas for ring exercises, trail riding, jumping, and, very briefly, competitive riding. Throughout, Ransford's tone is direct, concise, and instructive, reinforced with frequent boxed tips and clearly defined terms. The emphasis here is on English-style riding, but a few spreads show riders in western saddles. Even readers with horse fever, but no intentions of actually riding, will enjoy the vicarious turn around the ring that this useful volume offers. A glossary is appended. Gillian Engberg
