If Not For The Calico Cat |
But the calico cat isn?t happy; she misses her warm spot on the wharf. Roaming the ship, she runs through the flour barrel, walks over the captain?s maps, causes havoc wherever she goes. Meanwhile, a mighty storm brews. Did this calico cat really bring the sailors good luck?
With a charming text and marvelously enchanting illustrations, If Not for the Calico Cat reaches a delightful?and unexpected?conclusion.

Long ago in Japan, sailors believed that a calico cat aboard ship would bring luck--or so we're told in this comical tale about a ship that meets an unfortunate fate. The crew of theJade Lotus refuses to sail without a calico cat, so one is found and brought on board. The high jinks begin when the cat walks across the captain's map, leaving floury paw prints that the captain mistakes for islands. One amusing disaster leads to another until the ship bashes against an iceberg and sinks, leaving the crew stranded. A fortunate rescue is ironically attributed to the cat. The rich descriptions in the text (the "ginger-jar shaped" cook and the cat's "slivered eyes" that grow "wide, like twin moons") are well matched by brightly colored, detailed pictures. Children will happily return to this fast-paced adventure to soak in the enticing imagery of both the words and the artwork. Randall Enos
