Gr. 3-6, younger for reading aloud. This is similar to other books on saints--an oversize format, museum artwork (here brilliantly reproduced), handsome design. But there's something special about it as well. Perhaps it's the simplicity of the writing or the fact that angels are also introduced. The book begins with a short introduction, "What is a Saint?" Then the saints are grouped together--the Holy Family, Jesus' followers, gospel writers, martyrs, thinkers, and saints associated with peace and healing, such as St. Francis. The better-known saints get a two-page spread with a full-page picture. Less familiar names are accorded one page, with the artwork as an inset. A border records each person's particular symbol, dates, feast day, and the group he or she watches over. The angels have their own section at the book's conclusion, with guardian angels and the choir of angels getting a group description, and individual angels, such as Michael, a separate presentation.
