内容简介 When Father mysteriously goes away, the children and their mother leave their happy life in London to go and live in a small cottage in the country. 'The Three Chimneys' lies beside a railway track - a constant source of enjoyment to all three. They make friends with the Station Master and Perks the Porter, as well as the jovial 'Old Gentleman' who waves to them everyday from the train. But the mystery remains: where is Father, and will he ever return?
作者简介 EDITH NESBIT was a mischievous child who grew up into an unconventional adult. With her husband, Hubert Bland, she was one of the founder members of the socialist Fabian Society; their household became a centre of the socialist and literary circles of the times. E. Nesbit turned late to children's writing. Her first children's book, THE TREASURE SEEKERS, was published in 1899 to great acclaim. Other books featuring the Bastable children followed, and a series of magical fantasy books, including FIVE CHILDREN AND IT also became very popular. THE RAILWAY CHILDREN was first published monthly in the LONDON MAGAZINE in 1905, and published as a book in 1906 and has been in print ever since.

Grade 3-7-This is a delightful reading of a classic story by Edith Nesbit, first published in 1906. When father is suddenly taken away, mother and the three children must leave their fancy London life to live in a simple country cottage near a train station. The children and their bottomless good nature, together with some new friends, work to rescue father and help others along the way. Narrator Virginia Leishman makes this old-fashioned world come alive for today's children without resorting to melodrama. The recording is flawless and without unnecessary fanfare, making it a wonderful way to introduce a classic to young listeners.

From AudioFile
A mother and three children experience an abrupt "change in station" when their father is incarcerated and they seek a new life in the country. Finding themselves isolated and poor, they watch trains as their pastime. Jenny Quayle sounds lovingly detached as the mother. The children's voices are all sweet, but one of the two sisters sounds like a boy. Sound effects like trains chugging add realistic detail. This heartwarming production teaches young listeners about prayer and having faith in what they hope for. Review
The story of three middle-class children whose father is unjustly jailed has lost none of its poignancy over the years. They adapt courageously to their reduced circumstances and manage to have some exciting adventures on the railway near their new house: this is a timeless classic for children.
