Gr. 10-12.^B The action begins on prom night when Cady sees her crush, Lucas (the number-one "hottie" in school), slap Hope (the gorgeous class belle). Why did gentle Lucas do that? Where did he get all those scars on his body? And what happened to Hope and Cady's friendship? Told in alternating chapters from the intimate viewpoints of the three high-school seniors, the story slips gradually back in time, chapter by chapter, from the prom in June to the previous New Year's Eve, revealing a web of secrets, betrayal, power plays, love, and grief. The lengthy narrative is told in reverse; a character remembers something, then later the reader discovers what happened. A pity the solution to the mystery relies on a plot contrivance: Hope finds Lucas' journal. The whole may seem confusing, but each chapter is like a story in itself, filled with sizzling characters, fast dialogue, casual sex ("Everyone does it"), and plenty of contemporary trappings--from iPods to designer clothes.
