Parents should think back to their own childhood playing and spend more fun time with their kids than just encouraging them to do something related to study. The time spent on playing with children is quality time; but, to some Dads and Moms, family games seem to have become "lost art" . A successful cross-generational enjoyment is not a waste of time, but it contributes to the family's healthy integration and communication.
There are many parents who admit that they no longer remember how to play and instead tend to struggle with engaging their children to do something related to study. True enough, some of these parents might feel that family play activities are dull and boring and thus urge their children to concentrate on study. Moreover, due to work pressure and economic worries, it is probable that some parents may have little time chatting with their children, let alone playing with them. Apart from that, children nowadays would rather play video games than have fun together with their parents. This is particularly true with children (aged from five to 15) who prefer to enjoy themselves on the Internet on their own during their free time, which has nothing to do with their school coursework, of course. As a result, even though parents should spend time playing with children, family play times are few and far in between.
In that respect, what then could parents do? The importance of study for children aside, parents need to take a new step and think how beneficial it is for their children to play. That said, playing with children is for children's sake because a lack of family communication and integration is often harmful to a child's development, to say the least. For that matter, parents need to put playtime first, whenever possible, in a family environment. Further, to spend time playing with their children serves to narrow the generation gap and reduce what is called "sibling rivalries" that give rise to misunderstanding among family members. Unfortunately, many parents seem to be forgetting how to play like children.
In conclusion, parents playing children's game is for the sake of the healthy development of their children. It may be considered that the time spent on family fun is quality time for parents as well as for children. For children, there is time to do homework and also time to have a good time playing with their parents. (Essay created by Jeenn Lee Hsieh ielts360toefl@hotmail.com pigai zuowen)
