Section III Reading Comprehension (50 minutes)。第66-70题,每题2分。51、回答51-80题:

Text 1 In January l995,the world witnessed the emergence of a new international economic order with the launching of the World Trade Organization. The WT0,which succeeds the GATF,is expected to strengthen the world trading system and to be more effective than the GATr in governing international trade in goods and services in many aspects. First, trade liberalization all over the world is expected to increase via the dramatic reductions in trade barriers to which the members of the WTO are commitred.Under the WT0,members are required to reduce their tariff and non-tariffs on manufacturing goods. In addition, protecting domestic agricultural sectors from foreign competition will become awfully difficult in the new WTO system. Second,Iules and regulations goveming international trade will be more strongly enforced.Under the old systern of the GATT,there were many cases where trade measures, such as anti—dumping and countervailing duties, were intentionally used solely for protectionist reasons. The WT0’S strengthened rules and regulations will signifi cantly reduce the abusing of such trade measures by its member countries. The WTO is also equipped withall improved dispute settlement mechanism.Accordingly,we expect to see a more effective resolution of trade disputes among the member countries in this new trade environment. Third.new multilateral rules have been established to cover areas which the GATF did not address.such as in. temational trade in services and the protection of intellectual property rights. There still remain a number of problems that need to be resolved before international trade in services call be completely hberalized, and newly-developed ide. as or technologies ale fairly compensated. However, just the establishment of multilateral rules in these new areas is a distinguished contribution to the progress toward a global free trade system. Along witll the launching of the WT0.this new era in world trade is characterized by a change in the structure of the world economy.Today,a world-wide market for goods and services is rapidly replacing a world economy composed of relatively isolated national markets.Domestic financial markets have been integrated into a truly global system, and the multinational corporation is becoming a principal mechanism for allocating investment capital and determining the location of production sites throughout much of the world.Between WTO and GATT________.A.WTO and GATr govern the intemational trade at the same timeB.WTO is the pre—existence of GATTC.GATT is the pre—existence of WTOD.GATr is more effective than WTO in some aspects

、 According to this passage, under the WT0,________.A.measures of anti-dumping and countervailing were solely used for protectionist reasonB.it is still easy to protect domestic agricultural sectors from foreign competitionC.people can enjoy better lifeD.members should reduce their tariff and non—tariffs on products

、 Which of the following is NOT true about the WTO?A.WTO has achieved liberalization of international trade in service.B.WTO ensures effective settlement of trade dispute.C.Under WT0,regulations concerning international trade can be more strongly enforced.D.WTO covers intellectual property rights.

、 It call be inferred from this passage that________.A.under GATF some measures can not be effectively enforcedB.under GATT,the intellectual property fight has been properly protectedC.it is not easy for a country to get absorbed by WTOD.WTO cannot change the structure of world economy totally

、 Which call be the best rifle for the passage?A.The Launching of WTO and GATT.B.The Influence on WT0.C.The Superiority of WTO over GATT.D.The Influence Caused by WT0.

、回答56-85题:Text 2 Evolutionary theories. The Belgian George Lemaitre proposed the idea that about 20.000 million years ago all the matter in the universe--enough,he estimated,to make up a hundred thousand million galaxies--was all conccntrated in one small mass, which he called the“primeval atom”.This primeval atom exploded for some reasons, sending its matter out in all directions, and as the expansion slowed down,a steady state resulted,at which time the galaxies formed.Something then upset the balance and the universe started expanding again, and this is the state in which the universe is now. There are variations on this theory:it may be that there was no steady state. However, Basically, evolutionary theories take it that the universe was formed in one place at one point in time and has been expanding ever since. Will the universe continue to expand? It may be that the universe will continue to expand for ever,But some astronomers believe that the expansion will slow down and finally stop. Thereafter the universe will start to contract until all the matter in it is once again concentrated at one point. Possibly the universe may oscillate forever in this fashion, expanding to its maximum and then contracting over again. The steady-state theory. Developed at Cambridge by Hoyle, Gold and Bodi, the steady-state theory maintains that the universe as a whole has always looked the same and always will. As the galaxies expand away from each other, new material is formed in some ways between the galaxies and makes up new galaxies to take place of those which have receded. Thus the general distribution of galaxies remains the same. How matter could be formed in this way is hard to see, But no harder than seeing why it should all form in one place at one time. How can we decide which of these theories is closer to the truth? The method is in principle quite simple. Since the very distant galaxies are thousands of millions of light years away, then we are seeing them as they were thou- sands of millions of years ago. If the evolutionary theory is correct, the galaxies were closer together in the past than they are now, and so distant galaxies ought to appear to be closer together than nearer ones. According to the steady- state theory there should be no difference. The evidence seems to suggest that there is a difference, that the galaxies were closer together than they are now, and so the evolutionary theory is partially confirmed and the steady-state theory-in its original form at least-must be rejected. What do both theories assume to be true?A.That new material is continually being formed.B.That, in time, the universe will contract.C.That the universe is expanding at present.D.That "a big bang" started the expansion.

、 According to Lemaitre, the separate galaxies formedA.during a pause in the expansion of the universeB.at the time of the primeval explosionC.and will continue to form for everD.when all the matter in the universe was all concentrated in one small mass

、 What is the basic difference between the two classes of theories? ~A.It concerns the place and time of the formation of matter.B.It is whether the universe will continue to expand or not.C.It is the current state of the universe.D.The variations on evolutionary theories cause the difference.

、 According to Hoyle and his friends at Cambridge,A.the explosion occurred much earlier than Lemaltre suggestedB.it is hard to see how matter could be formed in this wayC.the expansion of the universe is not a real oneD.new material is continually being created

、 We see distant galaxies as they were long, long ago because ________A.they were closer together thenB.the universe has always looked as the sameC.their light takes so long to reach usD.they have travelled such a long way61、回答61-90题:Text 3 At dawn one morning in early May, Sean Cosgrove is stashing piles of maps, notes and photocopied documents in his gym bag before heading for West Milford High, a rural school in northernmost New Jersey. On his 30-minute commute, the young former investment banker tries to dream up new ways of lifting the monumentally forgettable Mexican War off the textbook page and into his students' imaginations. Can he invoke the storied memories of Robert E. Lee, who cut his first military exploits on the plains of Veracuz-or will he be met with thundering responses of "Who's Lee" ? Should he raise James K. Polk out of the mystic chords of memory, and hope, for a nanosecond, that the kids will care about the first U. S. president who stepped aside because he'd accomplished everything he wanted? Let's think some more. Well, there's always the Alamo. And hey, isn't that the teachers' parking lot up a- head? It's never an easy task. These big kids in big jeans and ball caps, come to his history classes believing that his- tory is about as useful as Latin. Most are either unaware or unimpressed that the area's iron forges once produced ar- tillery cannon for George Washington's army. Their sense of history orbits more narrowly around last month's ad- ventures on "Shop Rite Strip", the students' nickname for downtown West Milford, once a factory town, now a Magnet for middle-class vacationers. Cosgrove looks uncommonly glum as he thumbsthrough a stack of exams in the teachers' lounge. "I can't be- lieve anyone in my class could think John Brown was the governor of Massachusetts, "moans Cosgrove, 28, point- ing to one student's test paper. He had to be sleeping for days on end. The same morning, students in his college bound class could name only one U. S. Supreme Court justice--Clarence Thomas. All his wit, energy and beyond- the-textbook research can't completely reverse the students' poor preparation in history, their lack of general knowl- edge, their numbness to the outside world. It's the bane of history teachers at every level. When University of Ver- mont professor James Loewen asked his senior social-science majors who fought in the Vietnam War, 22 percent an- swered North and South Korea. Don't these kids even go to the movies? What did Cosgrove do before he became a teacher teaching history?A.A clerk working in a gym.B.A man running a bank.C.A sportsman.D.A historian.

、 On the way to school, Cosgrove ________A.was deep in thought of his pastB.was thinking of who Lee wasC.was thinking of how to teach his classD.was having a talk with another passenger

、 It can be inferred from the passage that ________A.the task for Cosgrove is quite heavyB.the students are enthusiastic about history studyC.the students have little interest in history studyD.West Milford once was a factory town

、 Which of the following is true according to this passage?A.Only the students in high school were poor in history study.B.Only college students could not study history well.C.Students at every level have poor knowledge of history.D.All American's knowledge of history was poor.

、 What's the meaning of the word "bane" in the 6th line of the last paragraph?A.Headache.B.Ban.C.Pleasure.D.Opportunity.

、根据以下资料,回答66-95题 As international commerce grows, there is an amazing development which is expanding at ever-increasing rate--business on the Internet. One of the most arresting auction business is called e-Bay. Down at the local auction house in the city, you would normally find excited bidders raising their hands or nodding agreement as the auctioneer rattles off the prices for a set of bookshelves, heater or second-hand television set. Now the same cut and thrust of auction selling is drawing not the hundreds who cram into a crowded auction room, but millions of Internet surfers who visit e-Bay, the biggest online auction site, and others of similar style. 66.______________________ For example, in one month when I looked at the colorful e-Bay site, these were numbers of items for sale in some of the major categories: Collectibles 684, 473 ; Sports Memorabilia 269, 051 ; Books, Movies, Music 267, 324 ; Toys 242, 155 ; 67.______________________ According to the e-Bay promotion, users can find the unique and the interesting on e-Bay--everything from chintz china to chairs, teddy bears to trains, and furniture to figurines. So why do people come to e-Bay? As the leading person-to-person trading site, Buyers trade on e-Bay because of the great number of items available. If you want it, somebody's probably selling it on e-Bay. Similarly, sellers are attracted to e-Bay to conduct business because e-Bay has the most buyers. There are over a million auctions hap- pening on e-Bay every day. 68.______________________ "People tell us that they come for all the cool stuff they can get, But they stay, even after they finish their col- lection, for the fun people they meet at e-Bay. 'Take your time, and get to know the e-Bay world' is their advice. So how do you make a bid and buy something at this auction? 69.______________________ First I had to register my name, email address and password with e-Bay. So they can track the sales and make sure that everybody is fair dealing. Remembering that bidding online is the same as buying or entering a contract with the seller, I searched under guitars in the Musical Instruments section with my mouse clicking on the various pages. I had a good look at the seller's feedback record. If the person selling goods on e-Bay has tried to cheat, or back out of a deal, email users of e-Bay can leave their own feedback comments, praising or criticizing the e-Bay seller, or bidder. This is every- one can see what is going on. The e-Bay company can ban anyone who has not acted by the rules. 70.______________________ The auction details were set out and the day the auction was to end ( in one week' s time). There was a nice picture of the guitar. I reviewed my bid of $20 to ensure that all the information was correct and clicked on the button "Place Bid". Unfortunately I was notified that my bid was not the highest-someone else had bid more money, so I missed out. However ,if I had put in the highest bid, the e-Bay website would have notified me that I was the highest bidder for the time being. When the auction ends, the highest bidder buys the goods.__________A.A.mong the special items for sale are an illustration of the winners from 84 Years of the USA Open Golf tournament, signed by the famous golfers, and framed. 71、 A.Most of our drivers said the A3 was their definite favourite in this group. They described it as refined and comfortable with good handing characteristics and light, precise steering. All the seats were comfortable and the front ones were easy to adjust. Most drivers liked the driving position, helped by a good range of steering wheel and seat height adjustments. The main instruments were clear and dashboard controls were well positioned. Mirror coverage was excellent but our drivers complained that the view out of the rear was badly hindered by the high rear window line and thick pillars. Getting into the back seats was easy, thanks to a clever seat mechanism, which moves the seat up and forward as well as tilting the backrest. Rear legroom was reasonable but the rear seat was only barely wide enough for three adults. Luggage space was average for this class of car but you have to remove the rear head restraints to fold the rear seat. There were plenty of useful interior storage spaces. All A3s come with an alarm and immobilizer as standard. Our 'thief' got in through the doors in 20 seconds, but the radio was a non-standard fit, which is probably to deter thieves. The hinges of the rear seats could release in an accident, allowing luggage to crash through into the passenger compartment. Also, the driver's knees could be damaged by stiff structures under the dash. Some parts of the fuel system and electrics would be vulnerable to damage in a frontal collision. B.Honda says its special VTEC engine has a winning combination of economy and performance, But our drivers found it a bit of a curate's egg. It was the most economical of the cars on test, But drivers found it sluggish at low revs, and its acceleration in the fifth gear was slow,so overtaking normally meant having to shift down to the fourth gear. The driving position was acceptable, but our panel criticized the restricted rear visibility--the rear window was quite small. Drivers found the back rest supportive but it was not available to make fine adjustments to the angle. The fide comfort was acceptable, But it wasn't as good as the Audi's or Rover's. The driver's seat didn't slide forward when it was tilted, making rear access awkwardly from this side. In the back, headroom and legroom was excellent but testers didn't find the seats particularly comfortable. The luggage space was small for this class of car, especially with the rear seats in place. However, folding the rear seat to increase luggage space was easy. Other points proved by our panel included well-placed minor controls, good mirror coverage, But fiddly radio controls. All Civics come with an immobfizer but no alarm. You may want to consider paying extra for an alarm, as our 'thief' broke into through the doors in 13 seconds, and into the engine bay in just five seconds. There were stiff structures under the dash which could damage the driver's knees in an accident, though there was no problem on the passenger's side. The handbook( like the Audi's) provided suggestion on using child restraints. C.The 1.6-1itre engine had good power delivery at both high and low revs but some drivers complained that it was noisy at high revs. The brakes didn't have very good progression, But drivers like their positive feel. Ride comfort and the handling were recommended. But drivers found it difficult to achieve a comfortable driving position. The driver's seat was not height-adjustable, and there was only limited space to rest your clutch foot. Some testers also found the seat backrest uncomfortable. Visibility was barried by the small mirrors. The rear view was also restricted by thick pillars and the small rear window. Getting into the back was trickybecause the front seats did not slide forward when tilted. Once in the back, leg- room and headroom were poor, and testers complained that their rear seat base was unsupportive. Luggage space was smaller than average for this class of car--this was compounded by a high boot sill and difficulties in folding the rear seat. But there were large pockets in the doors and rear side panels. The main radio controls were more convenient; they were mounted on the steering wheel so drivers didn't have to take their hands off the wheel to use them. Our Rover 200s came with an alarm, though this isn't standard on all versions. Our ' thief' broke in through the doors in 15 seconds. Some of the electrics would be vulnerable in a frontal impact. The rear seat hinges could release in an accident, allowing luggage to crash through into the passenger compartment. Also, information in the handbook on using child restrains was not adequate. D.At some point, most everything gets discounted, the regular retail price slashed and likely noted with over- sized red numerals and exclamation marks. In early spring, there are sales to clear out excess snow shovels and discounts on lawn furniture to get a head start on the upcoming summer season, which itself follows with selling bonanzas showcasing air conditioners and swimming apparel, or maybe 2-for-1 tickets to the local amusement park. Through it all, car manufacturers and dealers are offering every incentive under the sun to move the metal, an exercise that is becoming increasingly difficult because of one commodity' s unwillingness to decrease in price more than a few pennies every now and again. Gasoline never goes on sale, much to the disdain of SUV, truck, and large sedan-selling dealers everywhere. Unless, of course they operate under a Toyota sign, which means that sitting next to the V8-powered, four-wheel-drive Tundra pickup is a 2007 Camry Hybrid, a midsize sedan that gets an EPA-estimated 40 mpg in the city, and at just under $ 31,000 fully loaded, could be considered a bargain even at its retail price. Power for the 192-horsepower 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid comes from the company' s Hybrid Synergy Drive, the same gas/electric system used in the Prius and Highlander Hybrid SUV. In the Camry version, that includes a 2.4 liter, dual overhead cam, 16-valve four-cylinder engine with variable valve timing. Engine output measures 147 horsepower at 6, 000 rpm and 138 lb. -ft. of torque at 4, 400 rpm, with the hybrid' s electric motor tacking on a- bout 45 horsepower and 199 lb. -ft. of torque available from 0-1,500 rpm.根据以上内容,回答71-100题。has a driver seat that can be adjusted to fit most people?________________
