Passage Two
The first automobile was invented more than two hundred years ago. It used steam for power and had wooden wheels. The first automobile may have been simple and primitive, but it was an extremely important invention. The automobile today is the primary means of land transportation. It has produced more changes in our daily life than any other machine.
Almost all gasoline engines work in the same way—with four movements, or strokes, of a piston in a cylinder. The first stroke pulls the fuel mixture ( gasoline and air) into the cylinder. The second stroke compresses the fuel mixture. A spark plug produces a spark that ignites the fuel mixture and causes the third stroke. The final stroke removes any waste gases which might remain in the cylinder.
The preceding paragraph explains what happens inside the cylinder to make the piston move. When the piston is pushed down by the explosion in the third stroke, it pushes the connecting rod. This rod rotates the crankshaft. The crankshaft is connected to other parts which turn the wheels. Most cars today have four, six, or eight cylinders.

Passage Four
A group of people who share the same interests and way of life is called a society. Sociology is the science that examines human society. The term sociology is derived from the Latin word socius, which means "companion, union of people".
Sociologists are interested in how a society began and how it grew. They also study the levels within a society. For example, the child is part of the family, the family is part of the neighborhood, and the neighborhood is part of the community. There are many different groups, and sociologists are inter ested in the effect that these groups have on people.
A Frenchman named Auguste Comte made sociology a separate science in the 1830s. He suggested that a new science was necessary to study a society of people. A famous book, Principles of Sociology, was published by an Englishman, Herbert Spencer, in 1882. This book had an unprecedented effect on the science of sociology. In this book, Spencer theorized that a society's customs evolved, or grew from very simple to more complicated and advanced. This theory shows the influence that Charles Darwin ( who believed that man had evolved from very simple forms to the present human) had on Spencer.
