Tales of the Greek Heroes

Some of the oldest and most famous stories in the world—the adventures of Perseus, the labors of Heracles, the voyage of Jason and the Argonauts—are vividly retold in this single, connected narrative of the Heroic Age, from the coming of the Immortals to the first fall of Troy. With fresh dialogue and a brisk pace, the myths of this version are enthrallingly vivid.

作者简介

Roger Lancelyn Green was born in 1918 and lived in Oxford and at his family home in Cheshire, which the Greens had owned for more than 900 years. He loved storytelling and was fascinated by traditional fairy tales, myths and legends from around the world. He was a professional actor, a librarian and a teacher. His retellings include Egyptian, Greek and Norse legends, plus a retelling of Robin Hood. He also wrote many books for adults, including a biography of his friend C. S. Lewis, creator of the The Chronicles of Narnia. Roger Lancelyn Green died in 1987.

Tales of the Greek Heroes weaves together stories of ancient Greek heroes from the beginning to Troy. The stories are similar to any other retelling, but the book manages to make them more of a cohesive unit with one story relating to and leading to the next. These retellings are excellent and I highly recommend reading them to people of all ages!

My daughter fell in love with the Percy Jackson series a while back and she has been obsessed with Greek Mythology ever since. She has the D'aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, as well, but when I saw this one as part of the Puffin Classics series, I bought this one to see if it had any new stories in it. The illustrations are few but fantastic, and it is a great book for an older set of children. The D'aulaires is good for kids from kindergarten up, but this one requires a more sophisticated reader. If you have a child who reads at or around a 3rd grade level with confidence, they can likely handle this book.

My 9 year-old daughter read it cover to cover and loved every page.

I have long been a fan of the Greek Myths every since Jr. High. With "Percy Jackson" books giving these Myths a new spin, this is a great book to get acquainted with the origins of the plot elements found in Rick Riordan's great books.

you will discover so many of the items such as "The Golden Fleece," and run in to many of the many of the monsters, "Medusa," "The Minotaur," as well as see the parallel adventures found in the "Percy Jackson" books. These stories are far from boring and reading the original myths will give you a greater appreciation for why the modern versions by Rioran are so engaging.

If you've read up to the "Son of Neptune" you will see a familiar piece of wood that when burned will end a heroes life. Such are the benefits found by reading this book. You will also read about the greatest Hero of all and his many labors. A must read.

Roger Lancelyn Green had a great idea in creating a meta-world where all of the great Greek heroes interact as contemporaries. This idea works because the ancient Greeks saw their heroes as living in an organic "Heroic Age". It is a compelling idea but it is poorly executed. This book fails because Lancelyn Green must jam in all of the heroes and their many adventures into a short children's book. Jason, Perseus, Theseus and Heracles deserve their own books in which their many adventures can be properly told. These ancient stories are foundational texts for Western Literature. It is a real diservice to young children for all these stories to be bundled into a truncated text.

Really cool book, it`s like adventure and stuff and its action packed. Hey, if you like Greek mythology, then I suggest you read these series, Heroes of Olympus, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and The Kane Chronicles. Also, try the books, Son of Sobek, and Staff of Serapis. They`re about modern day teen half-bloods that face the same dangers that the old heroes faced. They are the best books ever. The books are written by Rick Riordan, the best author ever, who helped out making this book.
