Just So Stories (Wordsworth Collection) |
~From Publishers Weekly
The graceful prose and pungent humor of these 12 tall tales (which include such favorites as "How the Camel Got His Hump" and "The Elephant's Child") place them in the same league with such children's classics as Winnie the Pooh and Alice in Wonderland. Kipling's verbal dexterity remains audible over time--even the openings of his fantastic fictions hark to a golden age of storytelling. Frampton's elegant, elaborately detailed woodcuts are attractive embellishments to this hefty 122-page collection. Stylistically, however, they are perhaps more suited to the tastes of adults than children, as they are neither as colorful nor as playful as the stories. They do not reach out and hook the audience in the distinctive, visually arresting manner needed to keep pace with this eminent author's topsy-turvy logic. Ages 8-12.

Grade 1-5-- Those who didn't acquire the Just So Stories (Holt, 1987) illustrated by Safaya Salter have a tough decision now that Frampton has provided equally attractive pictures for this one. His edition has a more sophisticatedly primitive sense of design and color. The text is set in larger type, and there are many vignettes enlivening the pages. Employing a traditional woodcut technique, the illustrator makes effective use of high contrast between black and white, variable thickness of line, and the warm, rich colors suited to Kipling's exotic settings. Salter's pictures are quieter and more conventional (although her animals have human eyes), and her complex, textilelike designs in pale and elegant colors are easy to like. For those who can't decide between the two, Kipling's own eccentrically stylish black-and-white drawings are still in print (Schocken, 1987). --Patricia Dooley, University of Washington, Seattle

Gr. 4^-6. This handsome edition of Kipling's 12 original stories features 10 color plates as well as a number of black-and-white ink drawings. The drawings have a rather sketchy, informal look, whereas the watercolor paintings reflect the more polished, formal style of character portraits often seen in Moser's work. Libraries that offer a selection of the classics will want to add this version to their collections. Carolyn Phelan

Rudyard Kipling, (1865-1936), English short-story writer, novelist and poet. Kipling was the first Englishman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature (1907). His most popular works include The Jungle Book (1894) and the Just So Stories (1902), both children's classics though they have attracted adult audiences also.

Rudyard Kipling 写给他最爱的女儿的故事书。
我将据此推出一个全新的译本,交由蒲公英童书出版。
非缩写本,价廉物美,和我手中的原版磁带很吻合
this is a quote from the back cover: "The original book, published in 1902, contained more than thirty of Kipling's own brilliant illustrations, all of which have been faithfully reproduced in this Aziloth Books edition." "BRILLIANT" and "FAITHFULLY REPRODUCED" IS TOTALLY INACCURATE. The book itself is not large and the inside illustrations are ALL BLACK AND WHITE and SO RIDICULOUSLY SMALL that the reproductive quality is non-existant. The stories and poems are fine. I am SOOOOO DISAPPOINTED when the ILLUSTRATIONS, just as delightful as Kilings writings are impossible to enjoy..even the larger ones are reproduced so badly, fuzzy B&W lines. Some are as small as <1/2" by <1/1/2 " !!!
This new edition of Just So Stories is fantastic! One note: this edition is the published version of Kipling's original stories, word for word. Older editions were edited for certain words now considered offensive, particularly racial terms. This new edition, however, includes such words in an effort to protect Kipling's original syntax, a fact which customers planning on buying for younger children should consider. That being said, for adult readers this is a fantastic edition that includes Kipling's orginal drawings and captions as well.
The Just So Stories are best when read aloud to a child. My son and I have fond memories of these stories which I read aloud to him over and over 50 years ago. There's a sing-song rhythm to many of the passages that ring delightfully in memory. How can one not love the round tones of lines enunciated slowly: "Son, son, said his mother, graciously waving her tail" or "Down by the great gray green Limpopo river all set about with fever trees" or .."the precession had proceeded according to precedent." Kipling called them the Just So Stories because when telling bedtime stories to his daughter, he had to repeat them "Just So," as children are wont to do. Delightful.
I received the hard copy of this book 39years ago for my son, It had beautiful colorful illustrations of the stories and I wanted to gift the same to my granddaughter. I am extremely disappointed that all of the colorful illustrations are gone in this soft cover. I am not happy at all and it is sad to see that it has come to this.I would return the book but it would cost me more than it's worth. :(
My criticism is specific to the Kindle format: The "illustrations" are mostly photos and artwork that often have nothing (or little) to do with the text. The formatting is horrible with missing chapter titles. And then there are the many, many typos (presumably from faulty OCR) that indicate no one ever proof-read it. The only reason to pay for a public domain book (like Just So Stories) is for quality control...which is completely missing in this case.
