My name is Nick and I am 12 years old. "The Poky Little Puppy Follow's His Nose Home" is about a group of five puppies who want to go on an adventure. Their mom tells them they can go , but she also tells them to stay away from cars and they must be home by dinner time. Eventually they find cars in the city and they have to leave, but they get lost while they are in the city. So the poky little puppy uses his very good puppy nose and eventually returns from home. I liked this book because it is an adventure that little kids can enjoy. I would recommend this book for kids that are 4 or 5 years old.

作者简介

JANETTE SEBRING LOWREY (1892-1986), a Texan, wrote mostly teen fiction during the 1940s and 1950s. Her young adult novel Margaret was adapted into a TV serial, Walt Disney Presents: Annette, which aired on The Mickey Mouse Club in 1958, starring Annette Funicello. But Lowrey is best known as the author of The Poky Little Puppy, which was one of the original twelve Little Golden Books that launched in 1942. It went on to become an icon, and the bestselling picture book of all time.

GUSTAF TENGGREN (1896-1970) was a well-known illustrator in his native Sweden before immigrating to the United States in 1920. He illustrated many Golden Books, beginning with The Poky Little Puppy. One of the original twelve Little Golden Books published in 1942, The Poky Little Puppy went on to become the bestselling picture book of all time. Other iconic Little Golden Books illustrated by Tenggren include The Saggy Baggy Elephant and Tawny Scrawny Lion. In the late 1930s, Tenggren worked for the Disney Studio, providing concept artwork (created to inspire and guide animators)  for various characters and scenes in Bambi, The Old Mill, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Fantasia.

Before you balk at the $8.99 list price, keep in mind that this is the 65th anniversary edition of a Little Golden Book classic. Here is what you get:

1) First of all, the binder's board used on the front and back cover is much thicker (and consequently more durable) than the original edition.

2) The cover material (front, back and spine) is a single piece. The cover material wraps around the binder's board and is held in place by the front and back endsheets. This will virtually eliminate any peeling of the cover over time.

3) I'm not certain what weight the paper is that was used throughout the book, but it is a much heavier paper than the original edition. This should minimize if not eliminate tears caused by young children. In addition, the semi-gloss paper makes it more stain resistant.

4) Moreover, the pages are held together using the smyth sewn binding process, which means each signature spread is sewn together using binders thread. This is the highest quality bookbinding method available and virtually eliminates the possiblity of pages ever coming loose.

5) Finally, there is a 4-page addendum entitled "The Story of 'The Pokey Little Puppy'" that includes a photo of both the author and the illustrator. It's worth noting that even though the book has gone on to sell millions of copies, Janette Sebring Lowrey was paid a flat fee of $75 for writing the story.

When my children were young, I paid less than a dollar for Little Golden Books. They now list for $3.99. So, this anniversary edition isn't all that pricey; and for the added features, it's a bargain. My grandson will love it!

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I remember this book from my childhood. My five year old daughter loves it. I dont understand some of the complaints about it being old fashioned and not having enough pictures and rubbish like that. Kids today lack the enormous imagination that my generation and older generations had (I'm 34). Not to knock today's great children's authors, but I like the fact that older books made us think and imagine what characters or places looked like. Yes, this book may be "old fashioned" but so what? Give your child some sense of culture - present and past. Some of the bad reviews said the book didn't teach kids a good lesson, or that it sent mixed signals. With all of the mindless television shows and video games out there, does every book in this genre need to have a lesson to learn? Reading is already a learning process and it is very healthy for the brain.

I will be introducing more older books to my daughter along with the newer books available. I did the same with my older children and that helped to broaden their reading options.

I have loved this book since I was a very young child. An adorable mama dog with several equally adorable curly tailed puppies who look like terrier mixes are the featured character. One puppy consistently brings up the rear. When the mama dog tells her litter they won't get a certain dessert unless they get a move on, they usually disobey and end up foregoing their treat. The poky puppy comes in last and sneaks into the pantry to polish off said dessert. This goes on for a while and the puppies have been expressly forbidden to dig under the farm fence. The poky puppy ignores this directive and does just that - digs a hole under the fence. When he returns, his litter mates are treated to dessert and there is none left for him as he did not return on time. I still laugh about the posted notice after that incident declaring words to the effect of "NO DESSERT EVER FOR PUPPIES WHO DIG HOLES UNDER THIS FENCE!"

I bought this book because, #1, it was the classic like i remembered when was a kid. #2, and this is the more important one. I previously owned another book full of children's stories before buying this one. One of the stories is the Poky Little Puppy. But when i read it the first few times, I felt out of sorts with the grammar. After reading, I kept thinking, is this what grammar was like back then? Was i oblivious to run on sentences? I'm totally not a perfect grammar aficionado. But something didn't seem right.
So i didn't buy this new smaller book for any other reason beyond that it was smaller than the book I had been reading from. And the Poky Little Puppy was the only story he liked in it. And strangely enough, to my pleasant surprise, the first night reading it, it rolled off the tongue and flowed perfectly. Weird.

A classic story that is both fun and silly. The poky puppy always seemed to be rewarded for being late while his siblings were punished, until finally he isn't around while the others make amends and gets his comeuppance with no dessert. My three year old wanted me to get it after seeing it on the back of another Golden Book, and he really loves that parts with the signs telling the puppies they won't get dessert. Such cute pictures to go with a sweet story.
