The bit-part characters behind the world's current, and still evolving, financial debacles seem so absurd that you would think this book, 'Boomerang: The Meltdown Tour,' was a novel; a humor piece, not a true story; not really non-fiction.
But it's all real. Very.
Author, Michael Lewis, visits Iceland, Greece, Ireland, Germany and California. Parts of the world that have suffered badly from the financial collapse that became a reality since 2007.
He interviews financial industry analysts, politicians, including a former Irish prime minister. And colorful individuals; world citizens, who've personally suffered financial ruin, like a bankrupted property developer, a retired grandfather whose claim to fame was throwing two rotten eggs at the chairman of an Irish bank.
Somehow, Lewis manages to keep up with former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as they ride bikes, dangerously, around the streets and boardwalks in Santa Monica. It's an interesting interview, where Schwarzenegger is honest about the challenges he faced running the most populous state in the U.S.
Lewis' interviews are more like conversations with the players, than just questions and answers. And it's not just about the people, Lewis also paints a colorful, or rather grey, picture of the places he visits. In Ireland, "It's always either raining or about to rain." And in Iceland, the days are so short, "the sun sets with enthusiasm at 3:44 P.M."
Appropriately, Lewis finishes his book with a conversation with a California fire fighter who has to make do with cutbacks in pay, fire trucks and personnel. It proves that there have been real consequences to the instant gratification mania that snatched up the hearts and minds of bankers, politicians, property developers and home buyers.
'Boomerang: The Meltdown Tour' is a highly entertaining and mind-opening read.
I am enchanted by the style of presentation used by the author to kick start our minds into believing in the fragility of our international systems of finance.
No sooner does he have you on track than you are swept into a personalized experience with Iceland, Ireland, Germany......they are all line up against the wall and grilled.
So intimate is the knowledge & contact presence used by Mr. Lewis that you feel you were actually there at the right time, in the right place, sucking in the tainted oxygen of financial machination, legal or illegal.
A brilliant expose, leading me to seek more of Michael Lewis' output and absorb it like the knowledge sponge that I am. A pivotal book worth all the above praise!
Please read it if only to save yourself from the repetition of history.
Michael Lewis makes the subject matter interesting and provides insights into how events unfolded, prior to the bubble bursting in various economies around the world. The information is presented in such a compact manner and makes for very easy reading. I found the events leading up to the property bubble and subsequent burst in Ireland, particularly fascinating. It provides the evidence for the kind of craziness that prevailed everywhere, prior to 2008. The scary part for the average man in the street is that the "lone voices of reason" who spoke out about what had become very common financial practices, were made a mockery of. And this was not isolated to one or two economies, but was widespread. Loved this book!
This book brings together details of the financial dealings that gave rise to the GFC. The focus is on the countries such as Greece, Ireland, Iceland where the economies are most perilous. It is written in a slightly sensationalist and simplifying style which tends to detract from credibility. Nonetheless it is an engaging read that reminds of the appalling follies to which we are prone when the essential motivation is greed.
Lewis' book takes a look at the financial disasters in the countries of Iceland, Ireland, Greece, Germany and then touches a little on the disaster in the US. It is not a study of the whys of the disaster, but more about the personality of the disasters in each country. It is sort of light hearted at times, but not sure the Greeks would like to read that they are all corrupt--top to bottom.
