I Broke My Trunk! (An Elephant and Piggie Book)

When Piggie sees Gerald with a big bandage on his nose, she asks, "How did you break your trunk?" It's a long story. First Elephant tried to lift Hippo with his trunk.  "Is that how you broke your trunk?" Piggie asks.  No, there's more. Then Rhino came by, and Gerald lifted him with his trunk too. But even that isn't what broke Gerald's trunk. Gerald's story grows longer and more ridiculous as the book goes on and is topped off by a silly twist at the end. This may well be the funniest Elephant and Piggie yet!

Elephant and Piggie remain in the storytelling mode of We Are In A Book! (2010). After showing up with a bandaged proboscis, Elephant proceeds to tell the "long crazy story" of how it happened. Memory bubbles let us follow along: first Elephant lifted Hippo with his trunk ("Why?" asks Piggie. "Because!" Elephant answers). But that is not what broke his trunk, and neither is the addition of Rhino and Hippo's sister and Hippo's sister's piano. As usual, Willems' use of pastel colors and vast white backdrops work minimalist wonders, making this another fine outing of this most dependable of series.—Booklist

Gerald the Elephant recounts to Piggie the crazy story of how he broke his trunk. When he was playing with Hippo, he had the idea to lift him with his trunk. As Gerald tells Piggie, "a hippo on your trunk is heavy." But there is more to it. Rhino shows up and he wants a turn, so Gerald lifts them both onto his trunk, and so on, until he has lifted Hippo, Rhino, and Hippo's big sister and her piano on his trunk. As readers expect, there is more to the story of Gerald's bandaged trunk than first imagined. Willems's now classic and predictable formula, complete with an uncluttered background, large-type word balloons, and expressive characters, is as effective as ever. The style may now be familiar, but the "Elephant & Piggie" stories remain fresh, amusing, and relevant to readers, who will sit on the edge of their seats as they eagerly anticipate the surprising turn of events. A winning addition to the series.—SLJ

My Son was given a Mo Williams book for his 3rd birthday.. He loved it..and laughed at the facial expressions that Elephant would make. I bought him more books, and he loves each one. My son just turned 6 these Mo Williams books are still his favorite books. Always asks me to read them to him. Still cracks up each time.

They are very well written and very cute stories. The pictures are very clear and cute. Especially Elephant's expressions and what he says, makes my son laugh every time. Im using these books now to help him read, and he is reading well each time.

Highly Recommend these books.. All of them.. :)

Our fourth Elephant and Piggie purchase, all delightful... This one was particularly apropos for my grandson and I, but to say why would be 'spoilers'. I do wish the publisher would release a vocabulary list for the books. We have been making and decorating flash cards for words that don't follow common phonetic pronunciation rules.

my daughter's aunt got this for her when she was in the hospital & my daughter just LOVES this book! I'm also very quite fond of it, myself, so I definitely enjoy reading it to her to help her sleep for both: her nap and at bedtime. the very first time I read this to my daughter, while she was still in the hospital, she just sat & listened to me read & looked at the pictures.. for most of the book, anyway.. but I was amazed because my daughter is VERY active & it is pretty hard to get her to sit still & listen. my daughter is only 2-1/2 but, still, I know she loves this book and she repeats words back to me while I'm reading this to her, which is just too cute! it's also great, because even though she talks a lot anyway, it's helping with her word development even more. I'm definitely going to get all of the other elephant & piggie books, as well. if you have a little one at home, you really do need to get this book; ntm, the price is amazingly unbelievable!

Delightfully absurd. I realize that's sort of a stuffy description, but those are the words that sum up this book. It's funny, but not fart jokes or boogers funny (not that we can't all use a good fart joke or booger anecdote once in a while).

I require that children's books entertain me since I'm going to have to read them over and over again. I'm a sucker for my nieces and nephews anyway, but my little English teacher heart goes pitter-patter when they ask if we can please read the book. Even if we just read it. Even if we read it twice yesterday. I'm all for literary spoiling.

But, I'm also not into brain damage by repetitive boredom. So the fact that Elephant and Piggie crack me up every time makes their stories solid occupants of the bookshelf my tiny reading audience can reach. Yeah Mo Willems! Keep 'em coming.

My children have Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a brittle bone disease, and my youngest has broken her legs several times. Never while doing something wild and crazy, but usually some simple, fluke accident like kicking her leg out wrong.

So is the case in I Broke My Trunk.

It's a fun story about Gerald doing some wild and crazy stunts, told in such a way that will have you and your children giggling. In the end it was a silly accident that caused his break, something that is more than a little relatable in my home. This (along with every other Mo Willems books we own) is a sure hit, and a fun story to read before tucking the littles into bed.
