Went into my son's room last night at 10:00 pm and he was reading this book!! Went to wake him up this morning and he was reading this book! He can't put it down, he was even reading it on the way to school today. Needless to say, I will be ordering more from this series. I keep telling my son that once you experience a great book you will love reading, thank you John Kloepfer for proving me right.
One ordinary evening Zack and his best friend Rice find themselves in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. They join forces with former tormentors Madison (Zack's sister's best friend), and Greg, (jock giver of bathroom swirlies) to try and reach safety at a local army base. The illustrations are gruesome, pustule- and phlegm-filled, and oh-so appealing to the teen and tween set.
I highly recommend this book. It can be read in one or two sittings and your reluctant reader will not be able to put it down. It is not full of redeeming social commentary. It will not help your youngster explore his emotions. The characters are stereotyped (the geeky nerd, the vacuous cheerleader, the equally vacuous jock). And yet despite it all, the book is pure, tongue-in-cheek entertainment.
I read this book to both of my boys, ages 8 and 10. We are really digging this series. If you can stomach the grossness, then you can thoroughly enjoy the extreme situations the characters get into and some how manage to battle their way to victory. We love the little hints given, and my kids get to each guess what's going to happen next. Currently, we are on the third book, and things get even more intense, and believe it or not, more disgusting. We are going to go a little crazy having to wait for the release date on the fourth book. Nom, nom, nom.
My son hates to read!! I struggle constantly to find books that'll interest him so that he will read instead of play video games.. and these books did it!! He loved the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books but he says these books are even better! He's read all of them now and is always asking if there's a new one yet.
I have a reluctant reader who is enjoying this book and finds the story to be a BLAST. That alone deserves 5 stars for the mere fact that no prompting is required during our evening reading time.
