Porsche 917: Archives and Works Catalogue 1968 - 1975 |
This book is a must-have for Porsche 917 enthusiasts. Ferdinand Piech's preface is the prelude to a book that, unlike any other book written about the Porsche 917, is based on factory documents only. Many previously unpublished photos from the Porsche archive enhance this comprehensive and detailed book which, in the second part, minutely presents the story of each of the 64 Porsche 917s that were built.

根据国外Amazon网友推荐,这是目前市面上最全的917丛书。虽然很贵,但推荐骨灰级车迷购买。封皮实际是一张大海报,很有意思
While no proper motorsports history library should be without some sort of 917 content, I would recommend this only as a supplementary work to more detailed, technically-oriented pieces. They say "don't judge a book by its cover", but that is EXACTLY how this book is to be judged, because the title pretty much tells you exactly what's inside it.
It is not an "owner's manual" or a glossy coffee-table showpiece, and it is not a meaty technical treatise that gives you every detail about how the 917 was conceived and executed. Those subjects are danced around at best, while the lion's share of the text and photos deal with how many cars were built, who owned them, where they were raced, which chassis numbers went on which cars, etc., etc.
I purchased this book thinking I would be carefully poring over detail after detail for months on end, and had read through the entire thing in three evenings. It IS a VERY good book, NECESSARY perhaps if you consider yourself some kind of 917 aficionado, but not the be-all, end-all volume that I was hoping for. This is what you buy at the Porsche Museum when you've visited the museum. It is exactly what it says it is- and Archives and Works Catalogue.
This is the latest, greatest book covering the span of the Porsche 917 model from 1968 through 1975. It is a huge book, very heavy, very well made. When it arrived, right after Christmas, I was shocked at it's shear size. It weighs almost 7 lbs and is 2 inches thick! Coming from a former publishing background, I was immediately impressed with it's design, paper quality and printing. The dust jacket folds out to be a huge blueprint poster; very unique use of a dust jacket, I must say. The book itself is more of a numbers game book- So if you are interested in all the car's chassis numbers, and which car's chassis numbers were switched, scrapped etc. then this book is for you. It was written using Porsche archival material, so the information is accurate, and directly from the source. Not as many reference photos of the car's upclose as I had hoped for, but plenty of photos of different prototypes that I had never seen before. It is well worth the money Amazon is asking for it.
As an ex IMSA (in the GTP heyday) crewmember and engine dev. person, I can appreciate superior written and technical visual material. This book is the finest treatise on a single competition car series I have ever read, held in my hands or seen during my entire lifetime. Walter Näher has created a piece of documentation that, as far as I am concerned, stands alone at the top of the summit, in providing a complete and lasting visual, technical narrative of one of the most iconic racing cars of all time. It is both visually stunning and contains such a wealth of technical data on this car, that I consider it a doctoral thesis on the 917. If you have an interest in this particular competition vehicle, don't wait and order this book today. Just be sure and tell friends where you are, because you will disappear into the pages of this book for long stretches of time. "Walter, if we never cross paths, please accept my thanks for your efforts in making this incredible work available".
This is quite a magnificent publication and I liked the line drawings in the very front, denoting the marked variations between the Long tail and Short tail. The photographs DO reveal what an absolute death trap this car was, illuminating this by several photographs of crashed 917s, and of which hardly anything was recognizable. Included are many testing and racing notes, stories of drivers, managers, mechanics and many more, simply make this tome a must-have.
My favorite, the 917-10 is also heavily featured.
This is a very large and heavy book, and if packaged insufficiently well, it will suffer in transit - like mine. I specifically notified the vendor, books_from_california to wrap it well - which I thought they had, when the sturdy box arrived - only to reveal that the book had been placed inside with hardly any cushioning material, allowing it to slop about and causing damage to the cover and spine.
I am getting very fed up having to specify proper packaging to every Amazon vendor, only for my request to be ignored.
This book is the ideal present for the Porsche aficionado.
I'll add my voice to the other 5 star reviews. I won't restate the details, but if you are into the 917 then this book is a must buy. One note to make is while the title on Amazon's page reads "German & English" addition the publication details below correctly state that the book is in English only. With the exception of a stray "und" instead of "and" the book contains no German text.
