Super book and a huge help in detailing and building scale aircraft. A must have for the aircraft builder with super clear instructions and beautiful photos.
The book shows examples of 18 WWII aircraft built rather professionally, utilizing aftermarket and even scratch-built parts. It is rather a collection of exemplary models you can find in FineScale Modeler magazine. For beginner modelers, I would suggest "Modeler's Guide to Realistic Painting & Finishing" by the same publisher.
Years ago, I went to an IPMS national convention and was blown away by the artworks in miniature created by some very talented modelers. Looking at the incredible detail in those plastic aircraft, tanks, ships, etc. made me realize some guys take their modeling VERY seriously. CLASSIC COMBAT AIRCRAFT VOL. 2, MODELING WW II WARBIRDS, published by Kalmbach Publising in 2007, showcases some exemplary model work done by America's top modelers.
Volume 2 reprints 18 'how I did it' articles that originally appeared in FINESCALE MODELER MAGAZINE. Aircraft featured include a D-Day Spitfire, Gabreski's last P-47, a USAAF Mosquito, Butch O'Hare's Wildcat, a night-attack Stuka, an ETO Liberator, the 'Memphis Belle,' a North African Bf 109, Me 163, B-26 Marauder, etc.
While the articles are very instructive and easy to follow, most of the model work done in Volume 2 is not geared to beginners. Many of the articles deal with extensive re-working of various kits and require skills/expertise way beyond the tyro level.
Volume 2 features over 300 mostly color - and very helpful - photographs and diagrams including close-up pix. Paging through the book, it's hard not to keep repeating "Wow!"
The skill level issue aside, CLASSIC COMBAT AIRCRAFT VOL. 2, MODELING WW II WARBIRDS is aa illuminating, up-close-and-personal look at what expert modelers can accomplish. Recommended.
