Great Book
Karie is the best
The #1 concern of employees about their job is over their position changing or becoming obsolete say authors Karie Willyerd and Barbara Mistick. The authors, in collaboration with SuccessFactors and Oxford Economics, conducted twin studies of 2800 employees and 2700 executives in 27 countries to determine what the future workforce wants and thinks about. 1/2 of the employees surveyed were Millennials to give a future focus.
To antidote becoming obsolete, the authors advocate future-proofing yourself through a STRETCH approach involving five practices and 29 strategies. They describe the future global landscape megatrends which include increased globalization, data explosion - grow 4300%, emerging technologies - 3D, driverless cars, robotics, climate change, redefined jobs and increasing complexity and change. Fortune 500 companies used to stay on the list for 75 years, now their tenure is down to 15 years. Three themes for this new landscape: 1) it's all on you 2) you need options and 3) you have dreams
What are some dominant trends for the future white-collar workforce? The authors outline ten trends including: a flexible workforce (part-time, contract, temporary, talent shortages, virtual organizations, robots replacing employees, the end of the career track, and universities offering lifetime update subscriptions among others.
To flourish in this future workforce, the authors' research identifies top ten capabilities you need to flourish in the 2020 work landscape: functional intelligence, emotional intelligence, personal advocacy, cross-cultural dexterity, geek acumen, virtual collaboration, entrepreneurial spirit, creative problem solving, leadership and something they call stretchpertise.
One of the practices I found most helpful was the authors' advice to be "greedy about experiences". Instead of having a completion or performance mindset about projects, consider also a developmental mindset. Use experience to learn and grow skills. One strategy they advise to accomplish this? Get global to promote diversity of thought and values - read international media, create an international network, vacation-volunteer and work abroad.
If you feel stagnant at work, or are concerned about you and/or your job becoming obsolete, this book is brimming with ideas how to stretch and future-proof yourself through the five practices and 29 strategies. There are helpful chapter summaries, and a recommended reading list. Start with Carol Dweck's book MINDSET: THE NEW PSYCHOLOGY OF SUCCESS they recommend.
I found this inspiring, motivating and thought-provoking. With the acceleration of change, future-proofing yourself is a concept which is here to stay. This book is a helpful introduction to get you started.
