507 Mechanical Movements: Mechanisms and Devices (Dover Science Books)

Epicyclic trains, oblique rollers, trip hammers, and lazy-tongs are among the ingenious mechanisms defined and illustrated in this intriguing collection. Spanning the first century of the Industrial Revolution, this 1868 compilation features simplified, concise illustrations of the mechanisms used in hydraulics, steam engines, pneumatics, presses, horologes, and scores of other machines.
The movements of each of the 507 mechanisms are depicted in drawings on the left-hand page, and the facing page presents a brief description of the item's use and operation. Ranging from simple to intricately complex, the mechanisms offer a fascinating view of the variety of small components that constitute complex machinery. A detailed index provides easy reference to specific mechanisms.
Inventors, tinkerers, and anyone with an interest in the history of invention and technology will find this volume a treasury of information and inspiration.

100多年前出版的书,图示清晰,原理解释简明扼要,对产品概念设计和运动机构的设计非常有用。
国内机械领域专门讲各类运动机构的书很少,只好找外文书。

Really great book for its purpose, which is to illustrate various mechanical movements. I am interested in this as I am an amateur blacksmith and have a fascination with pre-electronic agrarian technology (I'm a mild-mannered Data Warehousing Architect by day, a raging Neo-Luddite homesteader by night). While I am incapable of fabricating most of these items with a forge and anvil, studying how these 20th century physical mechanisms work and transfer energy is fascinating. The early 1900s illustrations are crisply reproduced, printing quality is great. The descriptions accompanying each illustration are brief but fully adequate for understanding the physics and mechanical movements involved. Please click on the "Look Inside!" link of the book cover image to review what you will be getting. What you see is what you get, and this book fully meets all realistic expectations generated based on the "Look Inside!" preview. I will say it was a bit thinner than I expected, but it has the number of pages the description says (124) and annotated illustrations of the promised 507 Mechanical Movements.

I would not recommend this book. The illustrations and descriptions are minimal. In my professional opinion, many of the ideas presented are not practical and may not even work as described.

Too brief. Explanations inadequate or nonexistent.
Pictures of mechanisms are inconsistent with the inadequate explanations that are sometimes provided.
Some mechanisms pictured could never work at all.
Some complex mechanisms pictured look interesting but there is no explanation of function or purpose or method of operation.
My overall impression: A rambling collection of mechanical drawings of extracts of patents without the descriptions and useless drawings used as page stuffers to give the illusion that there is something useful or novel being presented.

This is a joke of a book. Basically a bunch of pictures with zero math describing rations of gears or power transfers. Worthless unless you like to look at pictures of mechanical devices.
Save yourself a few bucks and go to google images and just do a search for exotic mechanical gearing and you'll have 99% of this book.
Again no math, no explaining torque transfers, or differential ratios, or anything remotely useful in replicating or figuring these types of things out. A worthless catalogue of pictures and some wordy descriptions saying what can be seen at a glance...
