Leadership Transformed: How Ordinary Managers Become Extraordinary Leaders

How does a good manager become a great leader? Ask around in business circles and you’ll get a thousand different answers. But now, internationally renowned leadership expert Dr. Peter Fuda has created a single, coherent roadmap for leadership effectiveness in Leadership Transformed.

After more than a decade’s research and practice, Dr. Fuda shares the seven common themes that have enabled hundreds of CEOs around the world to transform themselves into highly effective leaders, and transform the performance of their organizations as well. Through his work, Dr. Fuda discovered that the best way to elicit deep and broad discussion of the seven leadership themes—and to describe the CEOs’ mastery of what they had learned—was through metaphor.

Fire—motivational forces that initiate and sustain transformation efforts.

Snowball—mutual accountability, and the consequent momentum that occurs when a critical mass of leaders commit to shared leadership principles.

Master Chef—leadership frameworks, tools, and strategies that can be “artfully” deployed.

Coach—how a “coaching staff” can collectively help leaders achieve their aspirations.

Mask—leaders can shed the heavy burden of wearing a mask in favor of a more congruent “best self.”

Movie—leaders can develop critical capabilities of self-awareness and reflection.

Russian Dolls—how a leader’s personal journey can align with the journeys of his or her colleagues and organization.

In his book, 'Leadership Transformed,' Peter Fuda offers unique insights into leadership. As he states in the beginning, 'Leadership Transformed is not just about leaders who have transformed themselves and their organizations. It's about transforming the way we think about leadership.' He continues to analyze leadership through the use of seven key metaphors, engaging readers in a reflection on these metaphors through personal narratives embedded in an expository format. Each metaphor is interlinked, illustrating that effective transformation is a process inclusive of both the leader and those that he leads.

The seven metaphors highlight what Mr. Fuda considers to be the core principles of leadership and include motivation, mutual accountability, leadership techniques, mentoring, how leaders should present themselves in a public setting, self reflection, and the alignment of a leaders journey with their organization's journey.

Of the seven metaphors I reflected deeply on the concept of mutual accountability. It is always easier to find fault with others but it is much more difficult to be objective about ourselves. Mutual accountability compels leaders to develop objectivity about themselves and reflect on what they also are doing wrong because the leader is held accountable by their employees as well as their superiors.

I also liked the fact that he includes information on access to his personal website, providing a free place where leaders can reflect on their leadership methods, with the hope that this will foster their transformation into more effective leaders. I found the metaphors that he utilizes memorable, and the stories he included of leaders that he coached helped me digest his message.

The use of metaphors makes the book easy to read while compelling managers to think about their styles of leadership and how they can improve. The price of this kindle edition and the free internet access of Mr. Fuda's personal website makes this a valuable addition to any manager's personal library.

The first thing that struck me about Dr. Fuda's book was the relatable fallability of the leaders that "transformed". These are not high and mighty CEO's who have had their stories polished by their PR teams. These are real women and men who are striving to align themselves, their executive teams and their organizations behind a common purpose and shared success. They seem to care about the humans as well as the balance sheets. Or perhaps, more importantly, they understand that one precedes the other. Dr. Fuda's use of 7 leadership metaphors and the personal stories behind the transformation elevate this book above the dozens of other leadership texts I have read by creating a deeper connection with the reader. I recommend this book in the spirit of the growing necessity that exists for all companies to understand that their successes rise and fall on the shared human experience of the people in their workforce, the importance of all managing for all stakeholders (not just fickle shareholders) and the role of the CEO in aligning these constituents through a human-centered leadership approach. Well done Dr. Fuda.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it provides pointed, practical, proven advice on what it takes to achieve successful transformation. The use of metaphors makes the recommended steps memorable, the stories make them compelling, and the quantitative evidence make them indisputable.

One of the important things not highlighted by the other reviews is that the book clarifies some of the popular misconceptions regarding change. An example is the role and importance of the "burning platform" to successful change. As Fuda points out, that *may* be what gets people thinking about and possibly even taking the first steps to change but it is definitely not what sustains the effort. And better yet, he tells you what does--so read the book! It's definitely worth it. The recommendations seem relevant not only to leaders, but to anyone who is serious about being successful in their efforts to change or in helping others to be successful in their own transformation journeys.

I don't normally take the time to review books, but felt compelled to write a review after reading Leadership Transformed. As a recently retired senior executive and now consultant, I have been exposed to a variety of leadership books, courses and programs. What I liked most about this book is that it provided an alternative view to all those previous experiences. But not only was it an alternative to the norm, it was refreshing to read a book written through metaphor and personal stories. More importantly the personal stories and metaphors resonated with my experiences. I could see myself in most of the concepts presented in the book and easily translate the metaphors into day to day application. I wish this book was around when I got my first leadership position all those years ago.

At nudie we run a business with many different components employing people from all walks of life; manufacturing, sales, finance etc. I have gifted this book to each of my Executive team. It provides real and insightful examples of leadership and provides a simple framework that delivers true motivation and alignment. Coming from a place of deep and real experience this book is a stand out in the crowded world of leadership books.
