For anyone who is fascinated by natural dyes, this is a great book to have. It's very easy to understand from novice to experienced dyer. As a former owner of a small press, I think the book cover is horrendous -- I would suggest leaving off the references to the book being a high quality paperback -- we can see that. You don't have to do full color, just leave off the big type size references to the book's quality. That speaks for itself.

This book recaptures the lost art of dying cloth. I can imagine it is a very useful start to understanding the workings on natural dyes. Personally I find the descriptions both fascinating and hilarious. A one point the book mentions when collecting lichens to make brown dye, it is best to wait until after it has rained so it is easier to scrape them off or rocks. It compares the benefits of using rain water to stream water, and speaks of heating dye vats with wood. A wonderful historical reference. Whenever I read this book it is hard not to think that these are the dye master's notes and recipes, while the work is done by a few apprentices sent into the woods with buckets to collect lichens and rain water.

These recipes from the turn of the 20th century emphasize plant and other natural dyes and production in home-quantity lots of material. It makes a good, if slightly advanced introduction to the dyeing of wool, cotton, linen and silk. Worth having if you're interested in dyeing -- including how to use stale urine as a mordant.

Great way to learn about natural dyes. A little intimidating with all the information but makes the natural dying process doable.
