I have long been a passionate Moomin appreciator - it's not just Tove Jansson's wonderfully strange fairytale world that so appeals but also her beautiful line work and exquisite sense of design (Lauren Child)

Tove became world-famous for her Moomin books which began with Comet in Moominland in 1946, closely followed by Finn Family Moomintroll and six more Moomin adventures. Tove Jansson received many prestigious awards during her lifetime, including the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal. She died in 2001, aged 87.

I loved this book. Loved the story of how the Moomins discovered Christmas and thought it was a threat they had to be ready for . I loved the story of Moominpapa yearning for the wicked life in the island of the Hattifaternes, the strange beings that only live for storms. I loved the story of the Hemulen and his theme park of Silence. I loved all the stories for their unusual and sometimes gloomy wonder. And not sappy or sentimental. Sometimes with books for younger readers the attempt to provide a gentle and uplifting message is swamped by Hallmark card pieties and sappiness. Jansson's books do not drift into such territory. They are clear-eyed and practical. The characters are flawed, but trying to do right. The stories have honest charm and wisdom, and humor, and are not "message driven". They are ddeft, and light and still satisfying.
This book came on time and in good condition. The mass market paperback copy I purchased has Moominpappa and the Hatifattners on the cover. I love Hatifattners so this was an unexpected yet wonderful surprise.
These are some less well-known short stories that take place in the world of the Moomins. They are sort of the opposite of tying up loose ends: in case you got too limited of an idea of some of the minor characters, these stories open things up a bit...
