just a real educational book~
I work in the university library and my parents own a few quick lubes (the places that change oil in about 15 minutes... like Jiffy Lube sort of) and the economy has been extremely rough on the business. People don't change their oil anymore and others seem to think that it's okay to go 10,000 miles between oil changes. It's not, by the way. Even though the car manufacturers say it's okay to go 7000 or whatever, they mean using fully synthetic oil and an extended performance filter, and only if your car experiences "normal driving conditions" (which does not mean city driving, by the way because that is a lot harder on your vehicle than highway driving with all the stopping and going).
Anyways, their business is going downhill fast and someone returned this one day and was raving about it. So I checked it out to myself and it really applied to their business and several others as well. It's not perfect, but the ideas are there and can help to inspire a business owner or corporation to improve. Some of the ideas work quite well to see where your problems are and to improve them.
I would recommend this book if you are dealing with this crappy economy, which, as far as I can tell, is not getting better for us regular people and small businesses and need something to help to further trim off some fat in your business/ company. It might also help if you are working in teams a lot.
The reason I gave it 5 stars is because some of the ideas aren't really all that helpful and there's a lot of filler in the short little book.
According to the back cover, this book is "a quick introduction to using Lean Six Sigma." Since you are looking at an introductory book, you are probably not familiar with Lean Six Sigma. The back cover again states, "Lean Six Sigma combines the two most important improvement trends of our time: making work better (using Six Sigma) and making work faster (using Lean Principles)." I believe this book accomplishes its stated goal. It's 92 pages of quick reading introduce the reader to the Lean Six Sigma improvement process through definitions, explanations and examples.
The book is divided into two parts: Foundations of Lean Six Sigma and Implementing Lean Six Sigma. The foundation section covers the four keys to Lean Six Sigma and the five laws of Lean Six Sigma. The implementation section covers how to get started, introduces the reader to tools in the Lean Six Sigma toolkit, gives a public sector example of where Lean Six Sigma was used to make improvements and what management needs to do to support a successful Lean Six Sigma effort.
A reference book on Lean Six Sigma this book is not. If you are already familiar with Lean Six Sigma, then look elsewhere for more information. If you would like an introduction to Lean Six Sigma that is both understandable and easy to read, I highly recommend this book. Having read the book, I now feel better prepared to read additional Lean Six Sigma books that will take my knowledge and understanding to greater depths.
I needed a quick introduction to Lean Six Sigma as they use it the company I work for so I bought this book.
From the first page I was hooked. The book is only some 90 pages but is crammed with useful information and give you the helicopter view of what you need to know about Six Sigma, it's purpose and what's in it for you and your organization.
I have now ordered more in-depth books about Six Sigma to understand the procedures and how they can be mapped to an analytical backend and a data warehouse.
The methodology looks really powerful. I am almost sorry I didn't discover Six Sigma until just now. But hey, better late then never. Buy it.
This book is incredible. My staff and I are reading two chapters a week. The staff is getting the concepts which are so vital to running a small business like mine. We operate a dental office where efficiency matters. Patients like offices which run on time and don't keep them waiting hours for their scheduled appointment. Patients like care sooner rather than later when they have an emergent problem. Lean Six Sigma teaches the "how" to providing Quality care and be timely and efficient at the same time. What would seem like an impossible goal becomes the norm. The enigma of Fast & Quality is resolved.
