Biogeochemistry, Third Edition: An Analysis of Global Change |
Biogeochemistry―winner of a 2014 Textbook Excellence Award (Texty) from the Text and Academic Authors Association―considers how the basic chemical conditions of the Earth, from atmosphere to soil to seawater, have been and are being affected by the existence of life. Human activities in particular, from the rapid consumption of resources to the destruction of the rainforests and the expansion of smog-covered cities, are leading to rapid changes in the basic chemistry of the Earth.
This expansive text pulls together the numerous fields of study encompassed by biogeochemistry to analyze the increasing demands of the growing human population on limited resources and the resulting changes in the planet's chemical makeup.
The book helps students extrapolate small-scale examples to the global level, and also discusses the instrumentation being used by NASA and its role in studies of global change. With extensive cross-referencing of chapters, figures and tables, and an interdisciplinary coverage of the topic at hand, this updated edition provides an excellent framework for courses examining global change and environmental chemistry, and is also a useful self-study guide.

Not that there are a lot of alternatives, but this is really the best book on the topic and the update was long overdue. It is tedious to read, but incredibly rich in detail and brilliantly organized. It is very comprehensive. It is a textbook/reference, so one should not expect it to be easy reading. I would rank this close to the top among the hundreds and hundreds of textbooks/references I have read or used in my 20 years. I rarely give 5 stars to a book, but this really is brilliant.
This book is a clear and thorough read. It contains many great case examples, and I didn't find myself confused at any part reading through it. That being said, the appendix is atrocious. You're better off just perusing the chapter that may contain a particular concept than checking the appendix. The problem sets are a bit confusing and unclear. It can be difficult to know what the authors are asking, and the methods to calculate the answers are often not explicit.
great info
I was required to buy this textbook for a class. It has been very helpful with the topics we are covering.
This is a very informative text that is applicable to a variety of fields. The authors do an excellent job of bringing together data from a myriad of sources to build a compelling case for fundamental linkages between the biosphere and abiotic processes on the planet.
