Why Vote Leave

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

'Confused about the EU referendum? In the dark about which way to vote? Daniel Hannan’s invaluable vade mecum will illuminate the whole question, showing why voting to leave is a leap back into the light' Boris Johnson.

'Powerful, intelligent, hard-hitting, well-written ... absolutely required reading for every Briton who is considering voting on 23 June' Andrew Roberts.

MEP and award-winning political writer Daniel Hannan argues for a British exit ahead of the coming referendum.

Hannan demonstrates that the EU is past its sell-by date, rendered obsolete by technological advances, shrinking economically and less relevant to our economic needs than ever. Worse than that, he shows that the EU can’t reform, can’t be democratic and can’t be divorced from its goal of ever-closer political union  . Staying in does not mean staying the same and a vote to leave – far from being the risky choice – is actually the safe one.

Finally, Hannan argues that Britain doesn’t have to stay in the EU to remain at the heart of Europe and considers the global role a confident nation freed from EU strictures could play.

'Before voting in this historic referendum you should read this brilliant book. If you’ve decided to vote Leave this will enthuse you, if you’re not yet sure, it will convince you' Michael Gove.

'A 'must read' for anyone who is surprised that so many of us now want to leave the EU' Lord Owen.

'I defy anyone who is undecided on the EU to read this book and not be a convinced Leaver. The case against EU membership is not Left-wing or Right-wing: it's democratic. Daniel Hannan shows how bright the UK's future will be once we leave behind the corporatist racket in Brussels' Kate Hoey.

'I defy anyone who is undecided on the EU to read this book and not be a convinced Leaver' Kate Hoey.

'The perfect book for someone who wants to hear a calm, clear set of reasons for leaving the EU' Baroness Jones.

'When it comes to the EU Dan Hannan has forgotten more than most people ever knew. He knows it from the inside, deep inside. He knows the venality, the incompetence, the bloated budgets and salaries, the many failures cynically covered up. He knows the staggering sums dragged from the pockets of the British taxpayer and the miserable return we get from them. The Brussels-worshipping brigade would be very wise not even to try to contest the points he makes in this book. For the rest of us it's an eye-opener.' Frederick Forsyth.

'The case against the EU should be made in positive, optimistic and internationalist terms. Daniel Hannan has done us a favour by making the democratic and economic case for independence. If you're undecided, this book might surprise you' Helena Morrissey.

Daniel is an absolutely brilliant and passionate orator, intellectual, author and historian. This book oozes credibility given he - very effectively - argues himself out of a job. As an MEP representing South East England, Daniel has an insider's view of the creeping super-state of the EU and critiques, with relish, the "mass of pettifogging regulation" and manifold economic dysfunction emanating from Brussels. As a student of history, Daniel incorporates important political theory to support his arguments, including Milton Friedman's "the tyranny of the status quo" and the "model of the extractive state" from "Why Nations Fail" by James Robinson and Daron Acemoglu. Also, the universal political maxim that "the problem is proportionate to the distance between the government and the governed. The more remote the institutions, the more prone they become to producer-capture." He further notes that: "issues are decided by a Continent-wide bureaucracy and then handed down uniformly to 600 million people" - a fatal conceit - and that "members will suffer to the extent they diverge from the mean. No country diverges as much as Britain." Daniel notes three core aims of the Eurosceptics: 1) "the primacy of UK over EU law on our own territory"; 2) "the right to sign bilateral trade deals with non-EU states, such as Australia and India"; and 3) "the right to control who can settle in the UK." Further, "None of these aims is in any sense immoderate or unreasonable. That they evidently cannot be reconciled with EU membership tells us a great deal about the nature of the EU." His strongest argument is around sovereignty and trade economics: "Nowhere else in the world is there an assumption that political integration is a prerequisite for free trade and cooperation." Citing official trade statistics, Daniel notes that only 21% of UK GDP depends on overseas commerce, with less than half that - or just 10% - accounted for by trade with the EU: "In other words, for the sake of 10 per cent of our economy that is linked to the EU, we must apply 100 per cent of EU rules to 100 per cent of our businesses." Lastly, as it relates to bargaining power between the EU and UK upon Brexit: "On leaving, the UK would instantly become the EU's single largest export destination, worth 289 billion pounds. It is very rare, in any negotiation, for the salesman to bully or threaten the customer." Daniel is the rare human who opts for the intellectual reward of arguing so persuasively that he finds himself out of a cushy job. The markets immediately rendered a view of Brexit as a negative for the UK, but more likely it is the EU that will ultimately fare much worse due to a negative selection bias. Ethics and reason triumph here over the heart and tyranny of the status quo. Be sure to read his other "Eurosceptic" book: "The New Road to Serfdom - A Letter of Warning to America."

The "on air" exasperation of Christine Amanpour, CNN's doyenne of international news, at Daniel Hannan in a tv interview post Brexit tweaked my interest in his pre Brexit book. The interview is on Google and it confirms Hannan's savvy and coolness under fire. Tho entitled "Why Vote Leave," the book might seem unnecessary at this junction; it is not; the failed "Remain" poobahs circle, intent on slaying the democratic vote of "Little England."

Ignoring the immigration issue which, according to the liberal mass media, seemingly carried the Leave vote, Hannan targets the EU's anti-democratic structure, its failing economic growth numbers, its restrictive trade and economic policies (e.g., fishing rights), the EU's refusal to bend when David Cameron tried to renegotiate and/or fashion policies more amendable to English sensitivities. Hannan's argumentative fluidity and adroitness is further enhanced by almost a dozen charts in support of his points.

For Americans interested in political science and foreign affairs, this is a superb book, pre or post Brexit, in countering the doctrinaire and orthodox thinking of the mainstream media like Madame Amanpour. Amazon is to be commended for marketing it so inexpensively.

The book is very easy to understand, all arguments are well thought out and I didn't find any major flaws in the logic for the leave decision. As a Czech citizen, I now also want Czech republic to leave the bureaucratic and non-democratic EU which has become something else than majority of people in Europe want it to be. The book provides compelling reasons why life outside of EU is not only possible, but much better indeed.

Another wonderful book by Daniel Hannan. I have just read his Inventing Freedom and it seems that events up to now (10 Aug 2016) support his positive thesis of an expanding Anglosphere. Project Fear has lost, though the sour grapes continue, as always. One can recognise the parallels between Brexiteers and the American Patriots of the 1700s as well as the Pro-EU Remainers and the English Royalists of the 1600s. Here in Sweden our politicians, press and police are madly spinning against a looming Swexit. Their fear is almost palpable, just like in June in Britain. The Elite vs The People is plain to see for Swedes when comparing The Media EU stories with direct evidence from the Social Media. Human nature, bias & blindness doesn't change much in different countries& through the centuries. But books like this have helped promote the angels in men and women and diminish our loss of progress to group think. Well done again Daniel Hannan.

I read this book after Britain had voted to leave the EU, which makes it all the more interesting in light of what they chose to do. I can only agree with Hannan that they've made the right decision. He brings out argument after argument for this being the best option, and shows time and again how it will be more beneficial for Britain in the long run; in fact, even in the short run (once they get up and running with the decision!)
It's of great concern that Britain's joining with the EU was based on lies, and worse, that the lies have only increased over the years, especially from the EU side.
I've just recommended this book to relatives in the UK who voted Remain. It's even more vital a read now
