Letters from Rifka

"America," the girl repeated. "What will you do there?"I was silent for a little time."I will do everything there," I answered."Rifka knows nothing about America when she flees from Russia with her family in 1919. But she dreams she will at last be safe from the Russian soldiers and their harsh treatment of the Jews in the new country. Throughout her journey, Rifka carries with her a cherished volume of poetry by Alexander Pushkin. In it, she records her observations and experiences in the form of letters to her beloved cousin she has left behind. Strong-hearted and determined, Rifka must endure a great deal: humiliating examinations by doctors and soldiers, deadly typhus, separation from all she has ever known and loved, murderous storms at sea--and as if this is not enough, the loss of her glorious golden hair. And even if she does make it to America, she's not sure America will have her.

This diary-style historical work is a fantastic read for students between grades 4 & 6, when I read it for the first time. I thoroughly enjoyed the chance to re-visit this work and relive a small part of my childhood reading list. "Letters From Rifka" would do very well as a classroom discussion book, leading to interactive discussion of the period of world history and conflict, including WWII and the challenges of immigrants entering the United States at that time.

It is especially important to read the author's afterword at the end of the novel. Although Rifka did not truly exist, the work was based on her own family history, adding a personal touch that may not have been possible in other, similarly written works without extensive research.

All in all "Letters" is a wonderful piece of literature, both for the classroom and those students who desire to read more on their own after discovering other literature written for the same time period, such as "The Giver", "Number the Stars" and "Diary of Anne Frank".

I was a victim of the "ringworm epidemic" of 1944 here in the USA. Unlike the young woman in this book, I was 3-4 years old.
This book helped me deal with the lingering emotional pain of that experience.
The book is well-written, and the main character seems so real and is based a bit on fact.
The author goes into the details for escaping from Europe and trying to get into the USA.

It's just like I expected it to be

I enjoyed this book very much. It was a quick read about a young girl and her struggles to come to America and join her family. Her unassuming diary makes the reader appreciate her courage and fortitude, as well as those simple acts of kindness that can mean so much to people. Great read....
