This is not just the best book on education that I have read, I'd put it in my top 50 non-fiction books ever. Informative, challenging, great breadth of research, and colorful first-personal stories make it a gripping read.
Carey starts by describing his experience taking at MIT, then continues with a history of the American university model, and predicts its demise in a comprehensive (if sometimes a little ramshackle) argument. The most useful part of the book might be the up-to-the-minute who-is-who in the EdTech sector - and some of the most exciting developments up until 2014.
One might say that in covering the psychology of learning, the history of the university, the history of online learning, the history of the internet (a little), and a thorough description of today's playing field is too ambitious - "one inch deep, and one mile wide". Yet the breadth, and (ok) lack of depth are precisely what is needed in this time of great tumult (and threat) to the American university.
Change is coming to US education - yet the sector is (structurally) the most conservative I have ever encountered (as a consultant-strategist). By "structurally" I mean accreditation, the tenure process, fiercely protected cultures, budget constraints, fearful trustees and governors. It has managed to resist the 21st century successfully so far - will it be able to do so for another generation. I think not, and neither does Carey.
Now for the shameless self-plug. "The fact that someone in a hut in Kigali with a broadband connection can take a course from Andrew Ng (Stanford) in Machine Learning FOR FREE is one of the most transformational inventions since the printing press." (Paul Gibbons - The Science of Organizational Change)
If you have spent time thinking about how technology will interact with higher education and you have not yet read this book, your thoughts are incomplete.
Highly recommended to both parents and educators; a great overview of what the years to come have in store in regard to higher education.
