基根教授的名著,虽然有些观点稍显过时,但绝对值得一读
John Keegan could give Barbara Tuchman a run for her money. In this excellently written speculation on three major battles (A Study of Agincourt, Waterloo, and the Somme.)
The first part of the book was a mixed message. I can understand that as a writer John Keegan had to explain that he has not been in a battle to quell detractors. However he may have overdone it a bit. Mixed with his apology is an excellent overview of what a battle is. I made it to the Tet Offensive 1968. He could have been next to me from his descriptions of battle. I did see some differences in attitude between West Point and Sandhurst. I would have been satisfied if the first chapter was the book.
Then he goes on to dissect three grate battles. I only knew of the battles through Shakespeare and other tellers of tales; so it was nice to get the skinny on what it was really most likely to be. You do not have to be in a battle to feel you were there but it helps.
This is one of those books that need to be re-read as there are too many details and you will have to pause and think about what you just read.
This book was very well worth the time to read it.
The first chapter was a bit slow, but after that, it was fabulous (not that the first chapter isn't good).
As a father of 4 soldiers (three in infantry) this was an eye opener. Kagan allows you to understand a bit more about what it is to fight on the front lines. He shows how so many junior officers and their soldiers and non-coms are the ones who are dedicated enough to force victory.
Also, without saying so, he shows the utter idiocy of having lawyers examine battlefield decisions by all ranks for 'war crimes'. I would go so far as to say that it is immoral to expect these officers and soldiers to act as lawyers wish them to act (this is not to excuse such incidents like My Lai where officers order their soldiers to fire on unarmed innocents).
I enjoy military history, and some of the battle-specific parts of the book are quite enjoyable.
The overall style is so stiflingly academic that it borders on the absurd. Run-on sentences and bloated redundancies within them have turned 180 pages of content into a 300 page bog hiding a few snippets of insight.
Difficult read, wouldn't read again, wouldn't recommend to others.
