As mindset is one of my current areas of interest and research, the reference to mindset in the materials I saw about this book is what initially caught my attention. I bought the book on that basis.

I found the book to be well researched and written. The book certainly kept me engaged throughout. I found the case study examples provided to be illustrious, helpful and interesting.

Even though I am a non-business person, I am very glad I read this book. I was particularly struck by the fact that most businesses fail or get in trouble due to internal conditions, rather than external market related issues. Given that I work in the employee wellbeing space, this was particularly valuable information for me to learn.

From my perspective, I think the authors did a great job describing the issues and potential solutions to each. Since these are described by the other reviewers, I will not repeat them here. I am definitely glad I decided to read this book.

My challenge now is to figure out how to best apply my new learnings in the employee health, wellness and wellbeing work I do.

This is a great book for business leaders -- managers, owners, directors, VP's -- or those aspiring to those positions. It moves away from the old idea of thinking about your business as if you were the CEO, and instead returns you to the "ground floor," of thinking about the things it takes to get to the point and staying there of "flourishing," of fighting off the challenges of the marketplace, and of finding once again the courage to look at your business as if you were starting from scratch. The "Founder's Mentality" is highlighted by four key components:
1. Front-Line Obsession
2. Strong focus on cost.
3. A bias toward action.
4. An aversion to bureaucracy.

I highly encourage any business leader -- particularly if you're starting to feel that your organization has lost its sense of direction -- to read this book. It'll return you to the proper mindset, and help your business stay on target for greater things!

Once again Chris Zook and James Allen have hit the nail on the head. I think that this is their best work to date for several reasons. They have distilled what makes (and can re-make) corporate entities strong-act like owners, push responsibility and accountability down, get back to the founding principles of the entity and fight bureaucracy. Of particular help were the check lists at the end of each chapter as a method to continually analyze your own company's adherence to the disciplines.It was also enlightening to see that even in the most dramatic of circumstances (free fall) that there were tangible examples of successful recovery. For any sized entities, this is a very instructive book.

This is a great book. Every manager of a company can benefit from the insights that it supplies. Don't be turned off by the title if your founder was not a great leader or manager. It cover a wide range of topic from growth to decline of companies and what you need to do if your company is stalling or declining.
