got this for my students. too slow in pace for 4th and 5th graders. the found it boring, and so did I. requires kids to already have built a background for certain aspects of European history, so if they haven't, they will be extra-bored. even for who harbor a morbid fascination for the plague, it's falls short of drawing readers in. i recommend McCourt's "Angela's Ashes" for young reads (has history, humor, and disease).

I just finished reading this book to my 8 year old as part of his home school curriculum. He thoroughly enjoyed it, especially as he is enchanted with knights and castles and such. The story was great and held his attention. My only complaint is that as a read aloud, it can be difficult getting the tongue around the language used in the book. It is written in an old English style which lends itself to authenticity, but can make it difficult at times while reading aloud.

If I could send a copy of this book as a Christmas card to all my friends, I would! Robin, the main character, and his friend, and teacher Brother Luke are a literary inspirational pair for every age reader for all ages. The Door in the Wall is adventure, inspiration, history, magic, and faith. DeAngeli conveys Middle English speech in highly readable simplicity. She paints sympathetic and concise living character portraits. Parents might read aloud this story to their children so that the story concludes at Christmas time to coincide with the book's Christmas ending. A Door in the Wall is the kind of book families can reread every year to appreciate Robin's courage and Brother Luke's devotion and the good humor and encouraging story DeAngeli wrote.

I love this story. It is good for kids and grown ups. I like that he does brave things, in a small, but determined way. Kind of like us. We don't usually have major horrific challenges. Those are unusual. But the challenges that sometimes do us in are the ones that we deal with day by day-health, safety, helping others, being cheerful in the face of adversity, not grumbling, learning patience in developing our talents and overcoming trials. He ends up saving many lives by doing just that-one step at a time. Too little of that being taught. The only issue I had was that the Kindle version that I downloaded had several misspelled words and a couple of strange sentences. I believe that these versions can be every bit as accurate as any other book. It is very annoying to have to decipher words in a story. Otherwise-EXCELLENT!

Such a beautiful tale of courage. I read this - happily - as a child and always remembered it. I went seeking it today and finished it in about an hour. Once more I imagined myself with Robin, feasting hungrily on cheese and bread and watching him whittle away at pine and oak as his adventures unfold around him. Highly recommend to any child of good reading age, and adults interested in medieval times or simply tales of courage and overcoming obstacles with a strong will and spirit.

I'm a read-aloud mom with a family of boys. We span a wide variety of interests in our family, and the ages range all the way down to kindergarten. This is a great book to read out loud, where the dialog can be spoken and the story can unfold. Really good for bringing out the courage and self-discipline of boys. This is very short, though -- hardly a week's worth of nightly reading, and they want more when it's over.

This is a 1949 Newbery award-winner. Still a great read.

Parent notes: Main theme of overcoming adversity and finding strength in your weakness. Reliance on prayer. The good King Edward in this book is the very same Edward Longshanks who was the villain of the "Braveheart" movie. I thought that was interesting.
