A GOLD HUNTER'S EXPERIENCE takes place in the years around the 'gold fever' that struck the US during the economic downturn of the late 1850s early 1860s.
The author is apparently an educated fellow who decided to write up his experiences in chasing the gold dream. Unlike others, he did not just head out West to Denver, but rather joined forces with some others so that the group raised about $9,000 dollars to purchase supplies, including mining equipment.
His journey west with oxen and gear I found to be entertaining. His observations astute, as some time had passed before his friends had asked him to write this little treatise. He talks about the beauty of the land, the Sioux and Pawnee, as well as makes reference to diverse topics such as buffalo hunting, Fort Vrain, and being formerly a vegetarian.
Some of my misconceptions about how mining was done, and how miner communities worked, were dispelled. And while there were some 'jumpy' moments in the narrative, this was altogether an entertaining read that made it's transference to ebook quite well.
Definitely Recommend for those who love glimpses of the past.
This is one of my favorite books, you can get it free on line but I liked it so much I decided I would like a print copy.
Being a gold prospector and a mountain man myself I found the book a very good read. The writer makes you feel like you are right there.
