Royal Society Research Professor Emeritus at Cambridge University and Former Visiting Professor of Design at the Royal College of Art, London, UK Mike Ashby is sole or lead author of several of Elsevier's top selling engineering textbooks, including Materials and Design: The Art and Science of Material Selection in Product Design, Materials Selection in Mechanical Design, Materials and the Environment, Engineering Materials 1&2 and Materials: Engineering, Science, Processing and Design. He is also coauthor of the book Nanomaterials, Nanotechnologies and Design.

Informative book with clear, concise writing. It uses the kinds of words you are accustomed to hearing in real life versus academic publications. It is very understandable and well-written.

The one problem I have is there are numerous problems in the calculations of many examples. I say this because my teacher has incorporated finding these mistakes into homework assignments... there are many! Please make sure to re-do any math you see!

Ashby is truly a master of materials engineering. I recommend this book to any student trying to become more adept at specifying design constraints with material selection in mind. There are several interesting examples to walk through the material selection process.

This is a superb book to get into a creative design mindset grounded in proper engineering. This book includes a lot of practical rules of thumb that are hard to come by such as the value of weight savings typically tolerable.

This book, which remains on my shelf for reference, is a great introduction to basic materials selection. Michael Ashby is the creator of the famed Ashby charts (materials selection charts) which make narrowing down materials choices for nearly any application far easier; this book has a wealth of these charts and all of the information necessary to use and understand them.

Recommended for any beginning materials scientist/engineer or mechanical engineer.

This is by far the best mechanical engineering book I've ever owned and I wish I had had it 30 years ago. Engineering departments at Universities should provide courses using this as a textbook. If you have the responsibility of choosing materials or designing new products, this book will be immensely helpful. It also shows why all the things around us are made from different materials. In the spirit of the book, I would say its benefit/cost ratio is excellent.
