Electronics for Guitarists

In the second edition of Electronics for Guitarists author Denton Dailey teaches the basic theory of operation and design principles of analog guitar signal processing circuits and amplifiers. The design and operation of common effects circuits such as tone controls, preamps, phasers, flangers, envelope followers, distortion and overdrives are covered, as are both solid-state amplifiers and power supplies. Written primarily for the guitarist, this book balances coverage of theoretical analysis and design while providing many examples of practical experimental circuits.

The main thrust of the material is analog circuitry, focusing on fundamental principles of transistors, integrated circuit and vacuum tube-based amplifier operation and theory, and operation of typical guitar signal processing effects circuits. Updated to the new edition include:

? New coverage of tone control circuits, MOSFETS and their applications as small-signal amplifiers, rail splitters and charge pumps, amplifiers using germanium transistors, and tube power amp design
? Expanded coverage of numerous subjects such as vacuum tube power supplies, the digital oscilloscope, Darlington and Sziklai transistors,? and signal spectra and transfer function symmetry
? Additional examples of various circuits such as overdrive, distortion, chorus, delay, tremolo and auto-wah circuits as well as amplifier design

Electronics for Guitarists is ideal for the musician or engineer interested in analog signal processing. The material is also useful to general electronics hobbyists, technologists and engineers with an interest in guitar and music-related electronics applications.

The book is incredibly detailed, even more than not engineers would expect. I, myself had to buy a physics book to remember/learn a lot of physics concepts. You will not only guitars eletronics, which is just one chapter of the book, but also detailed explanation on effects pedals and even more accurate lessons on amps circuits. Neverheless the book is absolutely complete. A bit rough for non-physicists/engineers but complete.

Amazing book and I got it really quick.

Gave this as a gift and got a positive response from the recipient saying it's an extremely interesting book and informative book

I have been playing guitar for 22 years and working in electronics for about 12. I went to a 2 year tech. school in Pittsburgh and loved learning. For the last 10 years I have done a lot of reading (Robert Paynter) and building. I will say that this book is hands down the best single book source for learning Amps, effects, filters and older tube stuff that you will find out there. Dailey is great at conveying complex ideas. I can't say enough about this book. This book is good for beginners as well as those with a solid foundation in electronics. Dailey like any good teacher seems be in the book business to help others learn and not to try to convince others of his intellect. Thank you Mr. Dailey, you rock.

Don't let the title fool you, this is not a book for non-engineers. It is yet another in a long line of books written by an engineer for engineers. The odd thing about this one is in the preface it actually states that it is written with the lay person in mind (as well as engineers). Literally within the first few pages he starts out with formulas with no primer for how to read the formula and apply it, etc. Please don't get me wrong. I'm sure its a good book. I have a few people I trust from amp forums that are giving it kudo's. But they are all math-minded people or engineers. I don't see why we need another book about guitar gear for engineers. Someone will eventually get wise and write a book for the hundreds and thousands of guitarists out there that want to know how to do some simple troubleshooting etc., but this isn't it. Very frustrating.
