Innovative Performance Support: Strategies and Practices for Learning in the Workflow |
“It is a book that will become dog-eared from use as it is both a narrative and a reference. Valuable now, and over time; it is worth every cent of the $30 cover price. It is easy to read, and easy to fillet for the right information just when you need it. The book comes at a really important juncture in the trajectory of corporate learning and highlights the importance of learning in the workflow. It is the right book, at the right time, in the right way.”

Highly recommend. Effective performance support is becoming more critical for success in every area of our lives. Think of how many new learning situations you encounter and expect immediate help, especially in the area of online - even with this website for example. The way we do 'traditional" learning must also evolve to match expectations of fast help!
I have been looking for a book with guidance and incite for performance support. This is it! I found what I was looking for.
There has been a dearth of books about performance support since the early 90's. Gery and Rossett aptly told the world about the importance of performance support but until recently there has been a lack of discussion about performance support solutions in today's "highly dynamic New Normal." Gottfredson's and Mosher's book offers a clear, comprehensive blueprint, principles and guidelines for understanding performance support. The book makes the case for an intentional and efficient performance support infrastructure or architecture, including strategies for retention and transfer, structuring and expanding knowledge capacity, and use of technology. These strategies are especially important in a world with rapidly changing requirements, needs and individual challenges.
This book delineates a very proactive process to identify and analyze needs to build, integrate, implement and track performance support solutions aligned with the company's business goals, strategies and practices. It also highlights and discusses shortcomings of many performance support systems. The book suggests a "New Blend" of solutions to integrate formal and informal learning into a "complete learning ecosystem" that supports those who need to "continuously learn, unlearn, relearn, adapt" and disrupt.
Read this book if you want to add another layer to you organization with a learning agility strategy for growth, progress and competitive advantage--"one that learns and responds quickly to adaptive challenge". Also, read this book if you are a social learning manager and want to consider the full spectrum of how social learning, collaboration and employee interactions impacts a performance learning support system. You will find strategies for planning social learning across the five moments of learning need. Finally, read this book to consider many strategies to bridge between conventional, formal learning experiences with individualized experiences supported by efficient performance support solutions.
Especially consider this book to analyze and identify how individuals need to adapt, learn and perform to succeed and use resources differently or more successfully. This book offers innovative solutions that consider which strategies help learners achieve their most efficient and effective learning and performance goals.
Read this book if you are interested in exploring performance support for tomorrow's learning challenges. Learn how performance support can enhance your training and eLearning initiatives!
This is an outstanding book, and one sure to be of great value to Learning and Development professionals. Performance Support has always been of critical importance as part of professional development -- whether you are talking about general business skills, IT or other technical areas, process improvement, or any other area of human performance in the workplace. But unfortunately it has often taken a backseat -- in terms of attention, budget, etc. -- to formal training, whether classroom training or e-Learning. The good news is that formal learning can be optimized and can provide more value when you take a performance support-centric approach to your learning and development initiatives. This is because training time can be shortened, and costs reduced, by making sure you are only training the core skills, knowledge, etc. that are absolutely required, while relying on a strong performance support infrastructure for the rest.
With this book, Bob Mosher and Conrad Gottfredson have shared their decades of experience in focusing on performance support in organizations, explained its role in Conrad's Five Moments of Learning Need, and given numerous real-world, and innovative, examples. But in addition, they have gathered world-class professionals from the Learning and Development field to add their additional insights for particular chapters. This includes Timothy Clark, Frank Nguyen, Ruth Clark, Allison Rossett, Maggie Martinez, Mark Oehlert, Bryan Chapman, and Carol Stroud -- all respected authors, speakers, and presenters from the industry.
If you have been tasked with an increased focus on performance improvement or just a reimagining of your current learning and development programs, then you should be seriously considering the role that performance support can and should play. And if you are focusing on improving performance support in your organization, then you can't find a better resource than this book to guide you on the path.
