Penny from Heaven

It’s1953 and 11-year-old Penny dreams of a summer of butter pecan ice cream, swimming, and baseball. But nothing’s that easy in Penny’s family. For starters, she can’t go swimming because her mother’s afraid she’ll catch polio at the pool. To make matters worse, her favorite uncle is living in a car. Her Nonny cries every time her father’s name is mentioned. And the two sides of her family aren’t speaking to each other!

Inspired by Newbery Honor winner Jennifer Holm’s own Italian American family, Penny from Heaven is a shining story about the everyday and the extraordinary, about a time in America’s history, not all that long ago, when being Italian meant that you were the enemy. But most of all, it’s a story about families—about the things that tear them apart and bring them together. And Holm tells it with all the richness and the layers, the love and the laughter of a Sunday dinner at Nonny’s. So pull up a chair and enjoy the feast! Buon appetito!

From the Hardcover edition.

I was looking for a calm, touching read about life in the mid-20th century and this book did not disappoint. The Italian family compare and contrast to the WASP family made it all the more enjoyable. The treasure hunt and Penny's accident were the suspenseful highlight of the story. Holm digs a few inches into the struggles of Italians (and her father's death) but not so deep that it overshadows the feeling of happiness in other areas of Penny's life. If you home school your children this would be a great resource for your mid-century history lessons.

Great book for upper middle elementary students and middle school students because it gives lots of historical information about growing up in America in New Jersey in the late 40's. Easy to feel the empathy for families that have suffered loss from war and social discrimination, while enjoying the story of a young girl growing up.

This is a quick read for adults, but has a powerful story to tell to it's audience. I am 5th grade teacher and am ordering a Literature Circle set to use for a group of young girls in my classroom. This story is full of details which I as an Italian American can relate to. It's interesting to learn about the history given at the end (few pages) about how Italian Americans were treated during WWII in America. It's nice to see Multicultural Literature that discusses the Italian heritage. LOVE this book!

My 9 yo daughter loved this story. It was funny, happy, and sad sometimes and since we are Italian she thoroughly enjoyed all the italian references.
