Gulliver's Travels |
Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1667, where he lived for much of his life. He was well known for writing satires and political pamphlets. In 1726, Swift published Gulliver's Travels anonymously and it was an immediate hit, reprinting three times that year. Although Gulliver's Travels was written as a satire of human pride, not as a children's book, it has long been considered a classic for young readers. Jonathan Swift died on October 19, 1745.

My seven-year-old daughter loves to read and I was eager to introduce her to the classics in English literature. I knew the original might be too daunting for her due to the high level vocabulary and have been looking around for a well-written adaptation that retains the essence of the original. The Stepping Stones Classic series of books for independent young readers fit the bill perfectly. These are abridged versions of the classics and are engaging without being too daunting for young readers who might otherwise be put off in attempting to tackle the original versions.
I make it a point to read these books before passing them on to my daughter to ensure she will be able to handle the language on her own and also to check the content. Nick Eliopulos has done a commendable job on this adaptation. The language is neither too simple nor too advanced for an independent young reader. There are black and white illustrations that engaged my daughter (a visual learner) and kept her attention throughout the two hours (collectively) or so she spent reading this book. The chapters are short and the plot keeps moving along, keeping the reader engaged. Highly recommended for independent young readers ages 6-9.
This Stepping-stone book managed to contain the highlights of the original in language that flowed smoothly and managed to be engaging despite its brevity. It doesn't just focus on the interaction with the 'little people', but also includes the encounters with the giants, the flying intellectuals, and the horse-people. For a child, this would be a perfect introduction to the original allegory and even hints at the deeper message in each encounter in such a way that a child might be able to pick it up. It's a well-written introduction to a classic and I highly recommend it if you are wanting to give your kids a foretaste of great literature!
P.S. For those sensitive to such things, be aware that there is one mention of Gulliver putting out a fire by peeing on it.
Kids 5-7 loved it. Great for read aloud or independent reading.
Excellent introduction to this classic for emerging readers!
My child fell in love with a timeless classic that I fell in love with as a child. This was an easy read and made for a great long running bedtime story.
