Structures: Or Why Things Don't Fall Down

For anyone who has ever wondered why suspension bridges don't collapse under eight lanes of traffic, how dams hold back-or give way under-thousands of gallons of water, or what principles guide the design of a skyscraper or a kangaroo, this book will ease your anxiety and answer your questions. J. E. Gordon strips engineering of its confusing technical terms, communicating its founding principles in accessible, witty prose.

作者简介

J. E. Gordon, a professor at the University of Reading, is renowned for his research in plastics, crystals, and new materials.

This seems like a niche book with a narrow audience, but as a non-technical person I found it to be a fascinating and accessible book about all-things structural. It does not delve deeply into equations or theories that would be irrelevant to a layperson. Instead, the author takes care to provide a good deal of historical context and interest to an otherwise bland topic.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting read!!

This book achieves what popular science books almost never do today - it gives you an actual understanding of the subject matter, not just the feeling that you do. The best science writer I've read after Feynman. There is some actual content here, but it is not a text book - it is a wide ranging exploration. Including a bit of simple math! And a curiosity about the world ranging from the cut of dresses to the singing of telegraph wires to the virtues of wood over carbon fiber. I wish there was more of an audience for books like this rather than the endless slew of books that simplify a topic to exciting ideas that are empty of all actual detail.

I was intrigued enough to give it a read as it was on a recommended list by Elon Musk. Even though I am math challenged the author made it easy to follow along and made me race through the pages on how things are done and how they were done wrong. I wish the author was nearby as I had questions I needed answering the more I read. A great book!

I purchased this book for my father since he is very much into books with a wealth of knowledge and also because he is expanding his book collection for his library. He enjoyed reading this book.
